Hi all!

A few words about how I ended up here..

I've recently moved to the countryside and was one night sitting on a chair on the balcony and heard some heavy cracks & noise from the forest nearby. I thought I'd have a look on what's in there and searched through the drawers and finally found
out what I was looking for: a crappy ((*previous word modified by Greta... this is a family forum... please use language that would be rated "G"*)) (which I at that time thought was pretty decent) plastic flashlight branded by the battery manufacturer Varta. Clicked the thing on and was disappointed at the result: a dim yellowish light around the target
area, couldn't really see anything. Distance was about 50 meters (~160 feet).

Then I recalled buying a small LED flashlight from the local electrical store. The small light had impressed me with it's brightness and shook my presumptions of flashlights: bigger = more batteries = more light! ;-)
Managed to find it quickly, returned to the balcony and expected to put her royal elkness on the spotlight. Click -- Wrong. The small bugger had maybe a bit more overall power than the plastic one but no way to focus it so it spread the light so wide that it was absolutely no use here...

That's when it occured to me: "I need a good flashlight". First thing that popped in my mind was to go buy a MagLite from the local supermarket - one of those big ((*another word removed by Greta... even though you used your own form of censoring, it is still not appropriate... "G" rating please?*)). Fortunately I ended up doing some googling that lead me here on the forums.
After some reading I ended up ordering Fenix TK40. I hope it'll do it's job in the elk spotting. Wife started moaning a bit after hearing the price on the thing but I did a quick defensive maneuver and bribed her silent with
a purple Fenix E01 matching the color of her purse. By accidental double-click I also ordered a black one for myself.

Now.. I thought I'd need a good all-around flashlight , "EDC" if you like. I've thought of some requirements:

- AA- based preferably. This is just because I've bought a bunch of quality Eneloop batteries of this size and already have a charger for AA/AAA. Not a must if some other battery sizes are much better... I don't know much about batteries..
- Length should be less than 15 cm (~6 inch) and diameter maybe an inch or less, small enough to carry in a jacket pocket comfortably.
- Few options to change the power level
- Focusable to a tight spot in the distance and also able to spread it wide to light up a large area close up, for example car engine bay. "Wide" lighting performance close up would be the priority here..
- Price hopefully less than $70

I'd appreciate if you guys could give me some recommendations based on these requirements as there seems to be loads of flashlight in this category..

How about the Fenix L2D. I has every thing you want expect an adjustable beam but i don't see that as a major problem for me I doubt you would either. I just got mine for $54(cant remember if we can mention store names). Anyway I think you would like it.

What batt configuration are you after .

dx/sku.20756 Throws crazy nuts on a rechargeable CR123A and runs on just about any bat that will fit inside .

If your after power , than any SSC P7 should do , if throw is super important , any multilevel Cree R2 ..

Not much in AA , there are a few to chose from , but , your limiting your options .

Ahhh... that focusable feature limits your option. AFAIK, only Led Lenser P5 comes to my mind but it's single mode (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There's also the customized LensLight Mini which isn't AA, and it's beyond the given budget and not to mention sold out.

So if you omit the focusable feature, there're aplenty single AA lights to choose from. Most of the good ones are reviewed by Selfbuilt here. My personal preferences have always been Nitecore D10 or Nitecore Defender Infinity. Other good ones are Fenix LD10, 4Sevens Quark AA and Jetbeam Jet-I Pro V3.0 but that doesn't mean the rest isn't good, just depending on your needs and preferences for each has their own strength. :)

There's also the Fenix E20 which is a measly $35.
Superb build quality as usual.
Pretty basic go to 2 x AA light.
And of course I highly recommend the Eagletac P100A2. Not focusable but has a bright hotspot with usable spill.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I'm not sure if I really need it to be focusable, I just thought that might be a useful feature. It may well be that the spill on these premium lights is so good that I don't really need it.. I don't have any proper lights yet, Fenixes are still on their way.

I think I'm trying either Quarks AA/AA2 or Nitecore D10 R2 to check out something different than Fenix.

+1 however I would find 2xAA a bit cumbersome to EDC personally, So I would be looking for 1xAA (Fenix LD10 comes to mind) or a 1xAAA (Fenix LD01 SS comes to mind)

If your cool with 2xAA though the E20 aint bad for the money, and is focusable :)

Quarks are pretty similar to Fenix lights, except a little enhanced.

But for AA/AA2, etc it seems a good price and the features are stunning.

Build quality unfortunately doesn't come close to the EDCs I'm used to carrying. But that could have been a problem with QC. A friend of mine bought a few and the tail end seems to be a little loose and the whole thing rattled. We managed to fix that though.

Good choices to consider. I think a Nitecore will be my next EDC light.

Be sure to search the forums.

Well everybody seems to be giving you good light recomendations and since im not an AA fan i'll leave that job to them. But you may want to make sure that whatever you do purchase is capable of being used with a beam diffuser. You may not be able to find an adjusting light but a beam diffuser will be your best friend when it comes to close proximity lighting or just walking in the woods.
