EDCing Two E01s?

I've been running an E01 for a year and a half and thinking about carrying another as a spare. Does anyone else do this? Is there a compelling reason not to or to go with another light?

Here are my reasons:
- Puts out all the light I need.
- I have beaten the snot out of mine and absolutely love it. No signs of starting to fail in any way.
- Runs forever on a single lithium AAA.
- I really like single level, simple operation.
- Prefer twist over clicky for general simplicity and durability.
- Reasonably priced.
- Fairly light (get it? Light? Haha!!)
- Great knurling.
- A second one would be a spare cell holder that had a whole set of spare parts if I didn't just use it by itself.
- In an emergency, I would feel 99.999% confident it would work as long as the battery held out.

The only things I would change would be a wishlist of items for a modern E01:
- More neutral or slightly warmer beam.
- Longer runtime (always longer runtime. n+1 until infinity).
- More colors?

You know, the more I write about this, the more I become convinced that two E01s is the way to go. Input? Thoughts? Feedback?

You might consider a E01-type of light. Like a Thrunite TI. Now the Thrunite TI doesn't use a 5mm LED like the E01 and it is more expensive but you can still pick one up for about $16 and they have a version with moonlight mode.
Might add some versatility to your system not to mention increased runtime.

Wow. I don't like these forums :) I just picked up a LD01 SS but the Firefly mode on this is calling my name. Hi my name is Jay, and I've got a problem :)

The only thing saving me is that it doesn't come in SS or natural/olive or I'd have whipped my credit card out already.

EDIT: Ah damn I had to Google. It comes in Gold.

@ OP: give the price, it looks like the TI with Firefly is a winner (depending on durability). I'm going to pick one up but have to decide if it's 0.04lm low or 3lm low...
 
hello, i think you have already talked yourself into it and the spare parts are always good. i was thinking buy a second one and paint it to whatever color you like
 
s1xty7, from what you have stated it looks like a second E01 is the ideal back-up for you. Suits your needs very well indeed. I agree about having a back-up - as the CPF saying goes: " Two is one, one is none ".

For me, I like a bit more light on the odd occasion when I fell the need, so an ITP AAA is my EDC (but I don't use hi very often). I used to have a fauxton as my back-up, but these days I carry the real thing (Photon Freedom Micro) as I like the ability to start on very low. The covert nose makes it much nicer to use as well (cuts out the side glare).
 
s1xty7, you have already said it all in your opening post. But did you consider carrying one E01 with one lithium primary battery inside plus one as a spare (you said you needed extra runtime)? Since, according to what I've read in the past years, the probability of E01 failing on you is very, very low. If you're worried about losing it, use a lanyard (or a good keychain carabiner/claw).

I have owned half a dozen of them, and absolutely agree with you about the tint. Runtime vs. lumens is already as good as it can be for a regulated 5mm LED and a single AAA.

I carry an E01 on my keys. It's always there, it always works when I need it. It is so reliable I forget about it most of the time and never consider carrying a spare.

If I did I would probably go for something like the LD01 which would provide a lot more output if needed but could also run for 27 hours (I reckon maybe 40 hours+ with lithium) on low.

But I wouldn't carry the LD01 on my keys over the E01 because I don't think I could just 'fit and forget' it.

Wow, the Thrunite TI was the kinda thing I was looking for suggestions about. It seems like a modernized E01 with some options. I actually ordered two (a blue 3/60 and a green 0.04/60) to try out. The 0.04 might be a good around the house light and I'm curious to see if 3 lumens will be enough for most things. It seems like a 5/20 or 5/30 version would probably be a good compromise. If I don't like them, I can just sell or gift them. I am curious about their durability and build quality versus the E01. It would take a lot for me to trust this new light as much. I'm not really digging the foam ring, but we'll see. Maybe a rubber washer from the hardware store instead?

As for the LD01, I've been tempted. I suppose if I happen across one for cheap, I might bite. Just a little more expensive/complex than I'm looking for.

The Preon has been tempting too, but I like knurling for the ease of one handed operation. And the E05 bugs me with that hole in the "lens". My lights get pocket carried and that hole would just fill with dust and pocket lint. Happens to my thumb drive and leatherman too much as it is.

What else is out there that I might be missing? Anything similar to the E01 or the ThruNite TI?

i have two of the Ti firefly's, one on the keychain and one bed side. so far so good. i have modded my bedside to only turn on to firefly mode so there is no problem of having 60 lumens come on in the middle of the night and waking my wife up.
 
Good pick on the ThruNite's, s1xty7.

I'm very happy with my firefly model. It's what a lot of folks have been wanting for a long time.

A "spare battery" carrier that is identical to an already trusted piece of quality gear makes plenty of sense. There is probably not a more bombproof AAA light made than the EO1. As far as the ringy beam and tint that may not be to your liking, try some 0000 steel wool on the LED. Works wonders. I've literally run mine over with a truck, (46,000lb. water tanker. Three times.) and the blue EO1 that I gave my teenaged son has suffered almost as much as mine has. Not the latest and greatest, but twist head, make light. Always. Simple as a brick, and runtime borders on absurd for what it is. At $12.50 each, you should have more than one, anyhow... :)
 
That bombproof design is exactly what I was looking for. I, personally, have multiple E01s and have given a bunch of them away as gifts. In fact, I even ordered some more spares for cars, etc just recently. I am curious to see what the build quality is on the ThruNite TIs and might use that as a secondary light. I have some initial concerns before the lights even get here (two-stage tab, foam insert, read something about a loose head) and some ideas on how to address them. They look neat, but unless they prove to be as durable as the E01, I'll likely just carry a second Fenix. There's some really good options, but none seem to have quite the simplicity or reputation.

Any other contenders for bombproof AAA light?

Maybe the Lumintop Worm? The modes are not that good and the low mode seems uneficient, but I did not hear many (if any) complaints about reliability. You can even have one in SS !

I have carried the e01 ,and then the e05, on my keychain for while , now I have moved up to the titanium innovations illuminati, same size, has a clip ,twist for three levels of brightness and can give you 115 lumens for 30 bucks, I will never go back, gave the little fenix's to my kids!

Hmmm, so given the price, the Thrunite TI slots right in there nicely as a compromise.
