I thought I would start a thread with the mention of the new optics availability. I think the new optics sound very interesting and I like that Peaks are using optics since it offers a little something else you do not typically find.

"The old wide reflector had a 3.5 ratio of light input, (in Lux), to light output. The new wide optic ratio
is 4.2 to 1. The medium optic ratio is 9.1 to 1. The old narrow reflector ratio was 10 to 1 and the
new real spot optic is 10.6 to 1. The ratio difference from one to the next may not sound like a lot,
but with such a small diameter light not much more can be expected. The ratio of the Logan using the
CR123A battery is 26.6 to one".

Anyways, the mention of the new optics was embedded in a thread that I just happend to read. I could have easily missed this. I am interested in picking up a narrow optic Eiger. Does anyone have one they can comment on? I have the medium optic and narrow reflector Rebel models. The narrow reflector has a pretty good amount of spill.

Artec540 recently commented on just that:

In my estimation:
The no-optic (wide) version has a really nice flood beam with no discernible hotspot. The medium basically has a very large ratio between the lux in the hotspot and spill, so depending on ambient light, the distance to the illuminated target, etc., it can look like it doesn't have much spill (because the spill is overwhelmed by the ambient light or the target is too distant). In typical conditions though, I would consider it to have a very usable hotspot and just enough/bright enough spill to be useful.

I guess I need to pick up a narrow optic myself.

Does anyone have the new narrow optic Eiger they care to comment on? I want to order one.

I've been planning to check out the new narrow Eiger but haven't yet had the chance. Really liked the (old) narrow Rebel Eiger... until I saw the medium which has spoiled me.

It would seem clear that the XPG-R5 with a new narrow might enhance the Eiger with both greater output and some additional throw. Output at the higher levels is, of course, amazing. However, I would hazard a guess that if the new narrow is preferred, it would most likely be due to either (i) the quality of the beam rather than throw since there is definitely a limit on throw with such a small diameter and shallow head light, or (ii) the added candlepower the new narrow offers may make the lower power levels more usable without detracting from runtime.

I have two eigers on order, one in a narrow neutral at #8 and a wide neutral #2. I should hopefully be getting them soon and I can post some pics when they arrive.

I have 2 Eigers both #0 one in wide and other in medium. Can't wait till they arrive so I can get the runtime test going.

Peak still has the cool and neutral tints on the website. Are the XPG's in both cool and neutral?

Does anybody think you would be able to read a book easily with a #0 running on a NiMH with the wide optic? I am looking for the level that would provide an adequate reading light without alerting or annoying those around me. It will be an XPG LED.

Thanks,
eala

Website is old and not reliable. If you want neutral you won't get XPG. I am not sure if they even have any neutrals around. They have XPG cools. You need to call and ask.

That won't be very much light... certainly not enough to allow reading "easily", except perhaps with good young eyes. Haven't seen a #0 yet but it will be considerably less light than even an old Arc produced. Maybe it would be adequate at short reading distances with the medium optic.

Thats what I ordered mine for primarily. Should be plenty of light.

I am getting my Peaks in the next day or so and they were both ordered with neutrals, and that was 4 weeks ago. Like others, I'd call to make sure.

did you have to call to get shipping confirmation? I'll have to call and see if Robyn has an ETA for me.

I ordered via the website, so they sent me a shipping notification, via USPS Priority. No tracking # though. Wish I had one!

Why does it take so long to ship out the light

Custom ordered/made to order is the best guess I could come up with, on top of the idea I hear they are busy with other models in production. Not what a customer wants to hear, but what can you do?
