EN-plated collars

Hi,

I see there are now EN-plated collars for AA and e-series in addition to the brass ones. Are the buttons also EN, or are they still brass?

None of the collars will fit the PM6. If you want a tab on the PM6, there is nothing better than directly tapping the PM6 body for the #6-32 set screw. If you install the set screw with Loctite, it will be sealed against moisture and then you can jam the tab down on the set screw. The tab is close to the body of the light and the carry on a swivel belt clip is as good as it gets, IMHO. The tab provides an excellent finger stop while using the light as well. If you use the "U" in the "lithium" text on the milled flat of the body for center of your pilot hole, the tab is in a great position.

Thanks, Don--I'm a little bit mechanically challenged, but I may actually attempt this. How much room for error do I have when I drill (I don't have a press so it may not be that straight)? Maybe I'll stop by Home Depot on the way home and see if they have that 6-32 tap.

You can consider me mechanically challenged. After I do anything mechanical I always inspect everything like my clothes expecting to see red stuff somewhere.

I had no difficulty in drilling and tapping the 6-32 hole and installing the tab on a few PM6s that I have.

I got my tap from Home Depot which came with the correct drill as well. Get some red loctite and you are good to go. I think Home Depot just dropped carrying the red loctite and you might have to goto a autmotive parts store to get the loctite.

Remember to remove the batteries from the flashlight before drilling. Some other suggestion are: Put the flashlight in a vice and try to align the drill perpendicular when drilling. Using a center punch or a small nail to generate a starting location helps in keeping the drill from wandering when first starting to drill.

Since the housing is aluminum, it drills very easy.

Thanks for the tips--I went to Home Depot today but they were out of the 6-32 tap so I have to put it off. Then again, I didn't think of this in time to include the buttons or collars in my recent order so I'll have to wait a little while anyway.

Well, whatta you know--I actually did it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif . Got the button and collar in the mail today (got the collar just to try it out on my MMM before I buy anymore). Had gotten my tap and bit a while ago and just went to it. Got the point started with a nail, drilled a starter hole with smaller bit and then went at it with the right bit. Tapped as easy as can be and voila /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif . Only problem now is that I gott loctite it as good as possible so I don't lose my McModule--that would suck. And the clip I was going to use broke, so I have to pick up another one.

This is going to sound like a dumb question, but what's the screw and the larger hole in the collar for? Can't seem to
put 2 and 2 together.

Anyway, here's the finished product.

The large hole in the collar is 1/4-20, for mounting on a tripod.
I forget the purpose of the screw.

That's right--forgot about that. I think if the large hole is for mounting on the tripod, then the screw is probably to hold the collar to the light since you may not want to use the button if you're only using the collar for tripod mount. That's the theory anyway. Thanks--it was driving me nuts.

when doing a minimag/miniminimag, you can drill a hole in the head, where the "lines" are. here is what i did with my personal mmm.

right now it's sporting a clip, but it is 6-32 threading, so a swivel brass button would work also.

just be sure to remove the madmax before drilling!!!

The screw that comes with the button is for mounting the button on the accessory port of a mclux powerpack.

Thanks, Roth--actually surprised myself at how well it turned out. The MMM is next up on the list. Haven't decided if I want to use the clip or the button yet. Is the wall of the MMM body thick enough to drill and tap? And did you use a clip blank, or did you make your own clip?

Tyler--I stand corrected. Guess maybe now I need a McLux to go along with my screw.

no, the minimag body is much to thin to be drilled and tapped.

that's a titanium blank from an online knife store. i think it's the same blank that was used in the mclux.
i've got a couple pieces sporting the clips...they're very nice!
