Wow, great travel companion. With more USB charging stations available here and there, this would be extremely convenient.

Similar gadgets have been around for years. Basically they are a power source (anything from alkalines to Nickel to Lithium) combined with a step-up (boost) 5V, 500mA voltage regulator. Even over at DX, you will find a whole bunch of them.
