Exploding Powerbook

This kind of crap makes me wonder if the industry will migrate to the safe LiFePO4 Lithium-Ion batteries. The voltage will be slightly lower and the capacity a little lower but it will prevent laptop fires. Maybe once the public at large understands that there is li-ion chemistry that does not explode, they will demand it and manufacturers will comply.

Dell knew that batteries were defective and got around to recalling them after dozens of fires. Apple has a recall in effect before this happened so kudos to them. I am in the market for a laptop and would strongly prefer not to have it loaded with "vent with flame" battery packs.

Anyone know of any laptops that run LiFePO4 li-ions or Valence packs?

no, but if you wanted, you could get your existing battery pack re-celled with LiFePO4 cells.

Now that one just might merit one of those product liability suits. Guess they should include a warning on all the iPods too since they too use LIon/LIpo batteries.
