Do you have a favorite light to experiment with?
Mine is the Romisen RC-K4. It's cheap $16 and it's easy to take apart.
I used it in an experiment to see if I could take it diving to 100 feet. I converted it from a clicky to a twisty and was able to dive it and turn it off at 100 feet without flooding.
The clicky to twisty conversion is the only permanent modification I've made to this light.
I've used it to see what the flood beam would look like by using it with the reflector removed. I've replaced the reflector with cheap TIR optics from DX (5 for $4) as well. These snapped in place so this doesn't have to be a permanent modification either.
I've used this light to experiment with different diffusion materials.
