For starters: What are the leads on the underside for? And why are there so many holes (10)? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The backside has a footprint for a National temp sensor IC and it will run from the LED+ LED-. I've never loaded this part and if you plan on doing some thermal work, you could load this part before making a sandwich for example.

There should be three holes opposite one another. These are for the two pin connector that goes down to the main converter board and the third hole is for the LED emitter leads.

The other holes are alignment reference holes to help center the Luxeon emitter. The black body of the emitter will touch the edge of the holes if it is centered.

As for how the emitter legs go down into holes when they are SMT pads. First you trim off the fat portion of the emitter LEDs and then flatten and re-bend them so they are straight down as they exit the plastic housing. This makes them a through hole part.

Hope this helps.

One of the alignment holes is used for the output of the temperature sensor IC and a wire can be attached to this to measure the voltage from the IC.

The IC is a SOT23 temp sensor. I think they are all pin compatible and there are several different types that could be loaded there.

yahoo! this is very cool! I was wondering where to place a temp sensor, and then it's already thought of! Very nice detail! As for the rest of the explanation, thank you my curiosity is satisfied and it was a big help.
