Nah, it's probably XP-G R4 (product code says E15R4BK). Perhaps I'm wrong and Fenix started to upgrade to G2 or whatever else "2" there is, which would be a good thing :)

That difference in lumens is perceptible only to opto-electronic measuring devices, anywayz.

Well, there is an R4 bin code for XPE too. The original E15 had an R3 XPE.

Is there really that much difference in lumens between two adjacent XP-E bins? When Fenix upgraded LD01 from XP-E to XP-G R4 there was a significant improvement in runtimes, since they kept the output down. That's the way to go IMO.

I have one just got it last week and it's a keeper - just compare it with my newly acquired JB PA01 (rated 140lumens) and yes the E15 is way brighter and it is still using xpe emitter.

let me make some comments on this as i have played a lot with this flashlight.
it uses a very good and efficient driver, giving .7 amp to the led.
only the very first had an output of 140 lumen, performance has increased by the time.
so, a xpe r2 would give 140 lumen, a r4 xpe 170 lumen, a xp-g r5 about 200 lumen and a xp-g2 about 225 lumen.
i am on my mobile had posted some posts about these numbers, i am not sure if i remember exactly.

anyway, e15 is an excellent flashlight, at its cost

Quite as expected, since PA01 has PBI of approx. 1000cd and upgraded E15 has approx. 2000cd (smaller emitter die & TIR optic), but in ceiling bounce test they're just about the same. I can hardly tell the difference between PA01's Medium (60lm) and High (140lm)...

I really like mine. Tiny,rugged and reliable. I like the tint and the optic. Wonderful light for the price.
 
Yep, the E15 170lm is a real keeper. Outdoor unscientific test in 'the woods', my new E15 170 vs my P1D Q5 = both are pretty similar in illumination. The P1d Q5 has a little more spill outside of the spot, but the E15 throws a tighter spot with less spill.... A darn bright light for the price, indeed.
 
Well, +1

I had some doubts about buying it to give it to my daughter (9 y.o.) because of CR123A.
Then, I considered that it's only one cell, so wrong battery mix is impossible,
and that the torch never gets hot, in the worst case it becomes only warm.
Since my daughter is a smart little girl, I went for the E15. She will have the E15 as her torch during her Guides/Scouts holydays camp.

It's a very light and yet so powerful torch, and 30h @ 11lm it's ok to forget about battery change for a long time.

170lm is surprising but 4h15' @ 88lm by one cr123 is a very neat combination.
IMHO, that's why Fenix decided to use this level at startup.

p.s. the led tint is very nice compared to the SC600 mkii
 
I'm a big fan of the Fenix E series. Starting at reasonably high medium works most of the time and the optics work much better than reflectors for my needs :thumbsup:
 
Is there identification on the package to determine if you received the 170 lumen vs the 140 lumen model? I just want to know if I purchase one I'm assured I received the newer version.

Yes. maximum output level is marked on the package.
 
+1 for fan of the Fenix E series, some really good lights in that lineup. Not the kind of sky high lumens that are the talk of CPF, but good runtimes and rugged lights. Wish a big box store would stock them in my area.
 
I have switched all my surefires with Fenix lights. very handy, affordable and dependable. :)
