can i do my own q5 mod?
i've never done one before but i can figure positive to negative and i'm sure could dig up a soldering gun from a friend.
is this something i could try myself to improve on an already good light?

Yes, you can do it. Once the head is opened, the emitter is easily accesed. Gently heat the solder joints of the connecting wires and pop them loose. Gentle pry the emitter off with a small screwdriver. Clean the remaining epoxy away. Have something like arctic epoxy at hand to adhere the new emitter. Quickly before the epoxy sets, screw the head back together and check the alignment of the emitter. Make any adjustments quickly. Re-solder the wires paying attention to positive and ground. Reassemble the head and fire it up.

I suppose it would be prudent to check that the new emitter is functioning prior to all of this but I've had success with 4 fenix mods without doing so. Takes about 10 minutes start to finish.

I have a couple of Q5's on stars from DX. How do I remove the emitters from the stars?

You may want to read up on some of the threads on the Q5 first. If the vf is much higher than your existing P4, the increase in brightness may not be too spectacular, leading to disappointment (especially since the L2D is such a great light).

I have modded Q5s (from kai) into my U2-clone and WF400 and they weren't much brighter - the tint was nicer though.

Because of the experience, I have decided to stop modding to Q5s and just wait for the R-bins to come out.

As an aside, if this is your first mod, you may want to start with a star mod rather than an emitter mod since the swapping and soldering will be much easier.

I think the L2D CE is current regulated so the brightness will increase by quite alot but you will lose out on the run time if the VF is higher on the new LED.
