Hi Folks,

Please bear with me - have searched your most excellent forum but not found an answer to my problem.

Bought a Cyclops pistol-grip flashlight (think it is the 'Flare') for following up wounded deer & wild-boar. Three white LEDs as a thrower and six green for a work light meets my requirements nicely. It is light, bright, locks off so as to avoid loss of power in transit - all is good!

BUT a short time ago, the white LEDs stopped working - no light, nada. No apparent reason, simply failed to work when I attempted to switch it on. There is a battery state indicator that illuminates showing plenty battery power, the green LED function works fine - but no white spotlight.

Any thoughts on what may have occurred and how to fix this unit?

Fault finding with this type of unit is black-magic for me - so hoping for some help!

No replies to date - folks, if this would be better posted in another section, please do let me know where.

I would really like to get this light fixed - they are not cheap in the UK & it did a fine job while it was working.

ANY thoughts as to fault-finding or common operation problems with LED flash-lights would be appreciated - I can help you with your shooting technique - but this is something I know nothing about! :)
 
There's a custom modified discussion section in the forum, perhaps the handier people there may have ideas

You haven't mentioned your basic electrical skills level nor the tools/meters you have. Have you opened up the light to check for voltage at key areas in the white led circuit? A pic of the light, especially opened up showing the wiring to the white leds would be very helpful.

Skills are more rifle related than flash-light orientated! :)

Having said that, I have a soldering iron & multi-meter and have assembled a night vision spotting scope from components.

My view is that the unit is dead and worthless to me at the moment. Anything I can do to improve this situation is a plus!

If you've got battery power to the "driver" for the white LEDs and they still don't light up, then most likely, there's a fault within the electronics of the driver and it's most likely not practical to fix it. The driver is going to be the last component in-line before the LED's themselves. The green set of LEDs should have the same or similar driver so if you have a meter, even a cheap $15 Radio Shack AC/DC multi meter, you can probe the green circuit and you should get the same results with the white circuit. A pic of the insides would help.
 
Many thanks BVH - that was my concern. Will follow your suggestion over the next couple days. Wonder if changing green for white driver is a possibility... or are they specific to the particular LED array?

With the unit torn down, it was apparent that there were no bad contacts or broken connections away from the the circuit board. As a last resort, I changed the + & - from the green LED array to the white. Theory worked and the system operated just fine - unfortunately at a much reduced output. :(

I guess different drivers will push the Cree array at differing levels, as the end result offered about .5 lumen.

On the basis that it is no longer usable, it has now been consigned to the parts bin.
