Flashlight for Cold Weather

Hi Everyone,

I told myself I'd only buy two lights this year (already bought the LD10 and am thinking about a Zebralight too). Now I'm thinking about a third light (this is getting expensive)! I need a light that can be kept in the car during the winter months. Winter temps can hit -40C and can stay at this temp for a few days before it warms to -20C. Anyway, can anyone suggest a reliable light that I can keep in the vehicle that will not let me down in the event that I need to change a tire, plug in when I get to work early, or something similar? Thanks!

Surefire G2 LED Series with SF123A primary lithium battery is great for your need.

Another great choice is Jetbeam PA40. It utilizes 4x AA batteries with 468-Lumens max output. However, I'm not sure how alkaline or Ni-MH batteries will perform under extremely cold weather.

I have used the 1XAA ZL (H50 and H501w) in temps down to -25F and my LD10 in -22F camping. Lithium primaries help big time. If for some reason you don't have gloves (kinda crazy for very cold weather) one of those plastic SF with CR123s would work.

- Use lithium primaries (123s, Energizer "Ultimate" Lithiums) only for vehicle light or extreme temperature use.

- Most lubricants used in flashlights will begin to seize near -40, make sure to use a lube that can withstand the temps of your application (Krytox is good down to -90).

The surefire nitrolon bodied lights are very good for cold weather, very comfortable to hold. Any lithium based light shouldnt fail you.
