Hi All.

I am new here and this my first post :)

I am not familiar with all of flashlight terminology but here is what I am looking for in flashlight. I am looking for a flashlight to add to my flight bag for flying or camping. I would like something with good long throw and flood, smooth light pattern (not sure of technical terms, but not like the shadows that Maglits have), LED with white and red or preferred amber light, 1 AA battery only, brightness adjustment, waterproof (if possible), reliable, and shock proof.

I already have a large Petzl headlamp that I use for the outdoors but want a flashlight. I guess I can always get one of the smaller headlamps.

What type of aircraft do you fly? Single seat, personal aircraft, cargo, or commercial passenger? I have found that even on my aircraft (Boeing 717 airframe) the lowest low of my .04 lumen firefly mode can be very bright on night missions! My absolute favorite light for flying is my Sunwayman V11R.
I have the limited edition High-CRI version so it is a little dimmer than 500 lumens on high and lower than 1 lumen. With its infinitely variable control ring it is the easiest to adjust to any setting over any other flashlight. It comes standard using a rechargeable lithium ion battery to obtain maximum brightness, but can also run on a disposable 3v battery. If you are strict about the single AA requirement, you can obtain the AA extender and use an alkaline, NiMH rechargeable, or Lithium Ion rechargeable battery.

Battery Junction has them in stock and with the CPF coupon code, the V11R and AA extender can be had for under $100. It has been my most reliable and useful flashlight out of all of my many many lights. Especially for aircrew duties.

The Photon Proton Pro is very close to perfect for you, and it has a second, red led bulb incorporated in it.
 
i do maintenance on wide body boeings. 777s and 747s
i favor flood more than throw, 60 feet is about the max distance i need to see up the vertical stabilizer.
i like a big hot spot, and brighter spill because it makes my job more thorough, and easier.

im guessing from your checklist that you plan to use the light in the cockpit and for your walkarounds, so you probably want a really low mode, and max mode.
and you also checked off more common battery types. such as AA.

i think a quark 2xAA will do nicely. foursevens offeres them with 2 different UIs. both tactical or regular UI would work well. moonlight on 1 mode, and max on the other. foursevens also has a "turbo" model with a larger bezel for more throw. but it only comes in tactical UI.

i could also highly recommend a surefire E2L-AA. (ive had both the quark 2xAA tactical and turbo 2xAA models, but i no longer have either, but i still have my E2L-AA)
good throw, good reliability and durability. always comes on low first, then high. its driven quite conservatively, so its max output isnt as bright as the quarks. but with its well focused beam it has no problem keeping up. its advertised as having 8-9 hours on high mode using 2x energizer lithium AA.
 
I'd automatically choose a Surefire A2 and get a Calipsoii ring with one red emitter and two warm white emitters. You can program the red to any level you like, for your map reading, then have the warm white emitters to another, battery efficient level that is an excellent tint match for the main bulb for when you really need some throw.
 
i do not work in an aircraft, but Streamlight Sidewinder ("Aviation" model) do have a few features you are looking for.

i have the older version that puts out 20 lumens max for the primary (white) LED with a runtime of 7hrs. starts out low, then steps up to high. i use Scotch "Magic" tape under the plastic lense to diffuse the beams for the primary white & secondary coloured LEDs.

newer versions have a max of 55 lumens (primary white LED) with a runtime of 5.5 hours. Military & Aviation models starts from lowest & progresses to high in 4 steps.

which model you choose with give you a different set of coloured LEDs. so far i've been using mine for about 2 years, dropped the unit several times from table height & the light suffered no visble damage & still works.
 
i could give the Quark a bump too. I use my 123x2 often on flights, but the moonlight is still too high for night flights in the cocpit.

Adnd of course as Kaichu Dento said, the Aviator. Replacing the LEDs with a Caliposii ring is a must for the extreme versatility. Ive never used the LED model of the A2, so I can only speak of the usefulness of the original model with the primary bulb being incandecent. If so, i would also replace that bulb with a Lumens Factory bulb for higher output and cleaner beam (with reduced runtimes of course)
 
Thank you all for your input. I think my head is spinning from all of the recommendations. A lot to learn.

I have my commercial rating but I fly only 2 or 4 seat single engine planes. I do like the option of being able to control the degree of lumen. I do want something small so that is why I was asking for 1 AA size but I am open to suggestions. I can go a to 2 AA size of light or something that take rechargeables. I also went with AA batteries just in case I need to re-stock out in middle of no where.

From a quick look, the Sunwayman V11R looks good and can use AA with optional extender, but I would have to figure out a red or amber solution for it. Please keep the ideas and your personal experiences coming. I will need to look at all of the other recommendations and compare the options.

I am sure I will be asking more questions soon.

In this case definitely get a Proton Pro - few lights are so easy to use and it gives you both dimmable red and white emitter, which starts on high for the white, but on low for the red.
Having a slim body that takes just one AA, it's one of the only 'CPF' lights that I've ever had anyone show me, and he was a pilot showing off his favorite flying light.

Keep the A2/Calipsoii ring in mind and watch the MarketPlace. If you go ahead and join the MarketPlace then you should put up a WTB (want to buy) ad looking for a Proton Pro and Surefire A2, with or without the Calipsoii ring.
 
For some time now I've wanted to get a replacement and swap both emitter and reflector. I think a better reflector, with a warmer emitter, could really make this a great light and it shouldn't be too tough to measure off and drill a hole for the red emitter in the side of the reflector.
