Has anyone tried to mod a focus for normal diverging light? My led torchlight didnt let me shine a long distance because the light is too diverging so instead of a spot of bright light I get a dim lighted area if I shine it far.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif

The light I have has no brand.. and I have no idea what led does it use but I think you can assume its the cheapest kind. I got it from an 'army market' where it was in a box full of them. I bought it for only about USD$20 and it even comes with 3 AAA energizer alkaline batteries free. It has 9 leds and on the tailcap there is a button to turn it on and off. The body and tailcap is made of a light metal with a grain textured finish and the edges and detailings are flawless and overall it feels pretty solid. There is rubber o-rings on the tailcap and the front part. The length is about 10 cm and the diameter 2.5 cm. Actually I love this torch the only thing which could make it better is a focus beam.

Focusing multiple light sources into a single beam is difficult.

You might be able to use some glossy-white 5mm LED reflectors and place one over each LED for better throw, but don't expect a laser-tight beam - 5mm LED arrays are almost always a bit hazy...

Arowana,

Welcome to CPF. I also have a multiple 5mm LED array light. It was my first light, and I had the same thoughts as you. I decided the thing to do was buy a focused 1 watt Luxeon light. I now think of that first light as having a flood beam, and I use it as an emergency light because it has a nice run time.

Thanks for your tip.. however, I'm totally new to all this I'll probably wreck the torch if I were to attempt to mod it in such sensitivity.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for your welcome Paul. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm exactly considering a focused beam now too. Are you happy with your focused beam light so far? I've found 2 types of focused beam lights so far, one uses the reflector to focus while the other has something like a magnifying lens on front to concentrate the beam. Which type is yours? Do you think the lights will not be so bright on those using the magnifying lens since they have to pass through extra material? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Are you happy with your focused beam 1Watt light? What brand is it?

Thanks!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Arowana,

What I got was an Arc LS, which uses an optic. It acts in a way similar to a reflector. It's a really nice light. But these lights are pretty expensive now (more than $100). The only place to get 'em is on the B/S/T Forum.

The lights I have seen with focused reflectors use the small 5mm LEDs. They have a nice spot, but are dim and have no spill light. I don't think I'd want one of them.

It appears this would be your first 1 watt Luxeon light. You might want to check out what other CPFers have to say about the following lights:

Costco Luxeon 2AA flashlights

2AA Luxeon Flashlight Test Results

V2 at Lowes.....

Keep looking and keep asking. You may even decide to start a thread, for example, that asks "What's a good first 1 Watt LED light?" or something like that. I believe a lot of new CPFers would like to see the answers to that question. I think you'll find the one that's just right for your particular need,

If he doesnt mind spending around $40 he could go with a Nuwai Q-III. Im sure he'd love it.
