FOUND! - a 4\" piece of 2x2 Angle Aluminum

I need to make an adapter bracket for my GPS to attach to a winshield mount arm, and I'm looking for a cut-off/scrap piece of 2x2 angle aluminum, about 4" in length. Can't be shorter than 3" long, as that's the hole pattern for my GPS housing.

If anyone can help, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks.

I have a piece or two of 1/8" 2x2 polished aluminum from 3' to 4 1/2 inches long but for the price of shipping you may be able to go to some place like lowes and buy a piece from them.

Mark, I beg to differ with Lynx_Arc. I believe taking Lynx_Arc up on his offer will be the be$t option. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif (And /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Lynx for making it!)

(I don't know if Lowes will cut-up a 3 foot or 6 foot length of the typical extrusions they carry and sell you 3-4 inches, and if they will cut it, I suspect you'll be taking-home the rest of the length for future projects. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif . My local industrial metal supply will do it, but figure on a ~$10 cutting charge.)

I got my pieces from a place I used to work. It was scrap and I picked up a few pieces for future projects. I couldn't resist the 2x2 stuff, it appears to be hardened aluminum as I cannot even make it flex by trying to bend it with my hands.

Lynx, if I could beg one off of you, I would be delighted. IM me and we can work out the logistics.

And I do agree with tvodrd, which is why I went this route. Seems to me that my local Home Depot had that stuff for $8 or more for a 4ft section, and I can't quite remember if it was only 1.5x1.5, or if they even carry the 2x2 stuff.

Thanks for the offer.

Hi Lynx,

Extruded angle is so handy, I never toss a piece! The alloy is typically 6063 T6 and anodizes well. (At least type II- no experience with III.) Also available is aluminum framing which comes in an incredible number of cross sections from many manufacturers like Item and Bosch. You can cut the stuff with a table or Skill saw and carbide-tipped blade and it typically has "T"-slots for attachment of you-name-it. For industrial automation equipment, it has almost obsoleted weldments! Extruded tubing can make nice flashlight bodies, just ask Mag. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yea I used to deal with extruded aluminum a lot in a previous job. We cut it with a carbide tipped chop saw with special lubricant although WD-40 works reasonably well this stuff worked better as a coolant.
