Does anyone use the 120 lumens P61 drop in with their G2? I know it should be no problem in my 6P or my G2Z due to the pyrex lens....but the G2 is lexan.....Ok to use for short bursts of illumination without damage....or is it better not to use it in the G2?

Thanks

I've never seen one melting because of the P61. I'd not try a P91 on two IMR 16340, though.

Have run that set up for over two years with no problems. Lexan is pretty good with heat. We use it all the time in commercial kitchens. Some of the inserts for my steam tables are lexan and they stand up to temps in the 140-165f range just fine. I prefer metal for better conductivity, but lexan will do just fine in a pinch.

I have a G2 with lexan window and a P91, used with two Powerizer RCR123's, caused the center of the lexan window to distort, to not be clear, sort of milky. Heat is doing that. Notice that the G3 has a Pyrex window.

I've edited my post, it a was a typo, I meant P61.

That is a great robust setup. I used to have a yellow G2 with a P61. I kind of regret selling it. The battery life was just too short for my tastes. I migrated to a 9P w/P90 LA. Not a wall of light but it has a pretty decent discharge curve if you don't run it for more than 5-10 minutes at a time.

All the mantience guys at the hospital have G2's and every one of them has a partially melted lens. I asked one of them about the light and if I could check it out because I thought they might be running P61's and yes they all were.

I eventually found out that all the lenses were like that mostly because they were not locking out the tailcaps when they were putting them back into that black nylon SF holster. So they would be sitting around cooking lexan on lunch break. Now they all know better but never got the lenses repaired. At least they all have floody beams for up close work!

I got mottled (slightly melted) lexan windows in my 6Z running a P60 quite often before I replaced the bezel with the hex/pyrex version, and the aluminum bezel acts as a better heatsink than the Nitrolon bezel...would obviously not be an issue with the LED versions with pyrex/aluminum.

You can swap the lens for a UCL in a few minutes. I used to run a LA similar to the P90 in a G2, which is not very hot. The lens was mottled, and the beam affected, in a very short time. The Lexan lens gets scratched up easily, anyway.

Dug up an old reply where I posted a beamshot before and after swapping lenses.
