Does anyone know if the tailcaps on G3's are the same as the ones on G2Z's?

The tailcaps on the G3, G3L, G2Z & G2ZL are identical. The G2 tailcaps can also be used on the above-listed lights, and vice-versa; However, the G2 tailcaps differ by not having the side grooves running the length of the tailcap, and they do not have the "USA WWW.SUREFIRE.COM" on the top of the tailcap.

I've only handled a few of the older G2 tailcaps and one relatively newer G3 tailcap. In addition to the differences cited in the post above, the newer G3 tailcap has a visual/tactile indicator nub on the outside, and a very small shoulder on the inside:

The last time I checked, the older-style G2 tailcaps still didn't have the interior shoulder of the G3 tailcap pictured above, but a tooling change could of course change this at any time. There isn't really a reason for SF to maintain two separate & distinct injection-molding tooling configurations for the nitrolon tailcaps. If I was to guess, I'd say that when SF uses up their older tooling / tailcap inventory, all new nitrolon tailcaps might be of the newer style? <shrug>

Edit: The only reason I know all this is that I double-o-ring the G2's I come across, but couldn't do the same with my G3 even after opening up (via a lathe) more of a recess for the second o-ring to rest in, due to interference from the interior shoulder of the G3 tailcap pictured above. I finally suceeded after trading my G3 tailcap for one from a G2, but it definitely ended up being much more of a hassle than it was worth...
