Gen2 L1 single mode only on RCR123

I've got a "bog stock" L1 Lumamax (second generation) which I've been feeding my old CR123a batteries without issue, I recently acquired a black protected Trustfire RCR123 which charges to 4.15v nicely etc.

The problem I'm having is when I use the Trustfire RCR123 in the L1 I am unable to achieve "low output mode" which is most perplexing has anybody experienced something similar OR perhaps someone could shed some light (excuse the pun) on what's actually taking place? :confused:

AFIAK SF single cell lights are not RCR123 compatible.... as you have found.
