I have a friend who is always impressed with my aresonal of lights I carry (all LEDs) with the least expensive being a Lighthound 5mm keychain light to the most expensive being either the Ti Aeon or Ti Lummi Raw. Anyway, I gave him a couple County Comm orange cased keychain lights and a Lighthound model. I didn't realize he used them every night when he walked his dog. So, I debated whether to get him a Fenix LD01, a Nitecore D10, or something less expensive, but am weary about Dealextreme or Kaidoman (sp?) because if the mixed reports here on CPF. I know he wouldn't use the light after the battery died even if I gave him extra batteries....which is why I wanted a VERY common battery type. So....since he like the 5mm keychain models, I ended up getting him a Gold Fenix E01. I gave it to him yesterday after he donated his time to a local Big Brothers/Big Sisters telathon to let him know he did well. Anyway, his first comment was "why is this (the beam) purple?" I tried impressing him with all the "fun facts" of it being a Nichia GS LED, that I included and Energizer Lithium +spares....etc. I don't know if he'll use it or not....I guess time will tell...the biggest surprise to me is that he noticed and commented on the poor beam quality and color...I guess I won't do that again...

Oh yeah...I chose gold since it is the brightest color available, not necessarily my favorite color, but easiesr found if dropped in the snow.

Thanks for reading,
Mike

"why is this . . . purple?"
You've gotta admit, it is very purple.

Bought an (ironically, purple-anodised) one for the missus and THANK GOD I did what we probably all do and tried it out first before handing it over ! Purple in a puddle of ... well, you get the idea.

Initially I thought it was busted, then after reading on here, figured they were all like that :(.

I couldn't possibly hand it over, so sprung for a L0D instead - first thing she did was look down the spout and strobed herself !

The more powerful lights like the L0D have complex interfaces and annoying battery demands. It's best to stick with moderate powered, 1 level lights for this sort of thing.

If you want a 1aaa keychain light with neutral color, try a Peak Matterhorn with the "snow" led. Arc also made one of those but they are currently (maybe permanently) out of stock.

Next step up, I think, is the Peak Pacific in 1AA format, in the "high" or "ultra" but not "super" power configuration. These have reasonable output and fairly long runtime on an ordinary AA alkaline cell.

The new Icon Rogue also looks intriguing.

I gifted a few Streamlight Stylus Pro's 2xAAA and got one for myself plus the Microstream 1xAAA. It _amazes me_ how much you get for $16-$20 with these two, they seem like a much better overall package than the E01, unless you need the much greater runtime (much dimmer of course) in the E01. My 1.5 cents.

my e01 is pretty purple too

my friends ld01 has a nice white tint but nasty rings and doesn't throw very well

if he uses it to walk his dog at night something a bit bigger than a single aaa light might be in order if he can handle the size and weight

Moonshadow - I know exactly what you're talking about! I'm going to give it a few days to make sure he either likes or dislikes it.

Paulr - I really like Peaks. I considered giving him one of my 3LED HP Matterhorns, but couldn't part with it. :sssh::oops::devil: I agree with you that the Icon Rogue looks pretty cool, too. I might have to "test" one out! :poke:

Kestrel - I considered the Streamlights, also. Knowing him and his wife, I wanted to get something that would be difficult for him to lose. I'm hoping the unique color will keep his eyes focused. :tinfoil:

victorsamuel - I have an LD01. I like mine. I think it might be too much power for him, but still a consideration, as is the older L0D. I will probably look at the AA format, as well. The Peaks and Rogue may be the next to get my PayPal!:D

Thanks for all your replies! :)

I bought an E01, yea, it's very blue/purple, so it's sitting in a drawer, probably get gifted to someone. But I got an LD01, fell in love with it, and gave my wife one, didn't even bother mentioning the multi mode. Works great as a single cell keychain without any other bother. Nice tint/beam/size/runtime.
