to buy a laser. I know I would like one, but what would I use it for really? What is good, and what is too lame for words? What things do I look for in a quality laser?

I never start at the suggested introductory level, I need something more than expected right away. So, if I were looking to be impressed without need for immediate upgrade.....what would I buy?

I bought a green laser from DX for $42
sku o4364 hope to receive it soon
reviews said it was 80mw instead of 50mw
it runs on 1x cr2 batt
should be a pretty good toy for not too much $$
good for astronomy also for spotting hand holds for rockclimbing or pointing out routes on rockfaces
annoying neighbours cat
increase the fitness of your pets ...dogs cats and fish will chase the dot ;)
you can point it at crystal and glass for lighting effects aswell.
anyone else have a good reason for buying one?

ok first of all don't ask "why buy a laser"

buy one and you won't be asking anymore only you can know if you like it or not.

No one call really just convince you with their liking.

But what I can tell you is that it attracts the kinds of girls who find lights or lasers cool. Or Love electronics.

I can tell you this much

If you go to a club every girl will be all over you.

Or they might pull out an RPL-425 and have you all over them :duh2: ...
The ONLY reason I bought lasers is for fun. I just ordered my first half-decent laser last week fron DX (which hasn't been shipped yet

). I can't wait to try it out!

I was at a star party last night, and there were several impressive green lasers used for pointing out various objects, so that's one reason. Apart from that, they're pretty fun when used responsibly.

We use our green pointers in the field of contruction to give direction and to indicate areas of interest. While lowered powered lasers may suffice for indoors use, not even an Optotronics 75mW will do the job at a distance under bright, daylit conditions off high albedo surfaces.

I use my lasers in several cases:
- the fun, or testing the visibility of atmosphere by night
- light painting
- playing with cats
- drawing something that have to resist to sunlight, by burning rather than with ink. One example is my name on my mail box (the real, physical one, not an email box)
- killing spiders
- pointing something to somebody.
