Glass lens for MiniMag AA?

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

Mag specs the 2AA lens at 25.15 mm...Brinkmann at 22.22 mm...I called and spoke to the engineers there..

John are you still happy with this mod?

I'm going to to with a Sapphire lens as soon as someone can confirm what size I need. I have a new Mag AA.

Thanks

ya know, I was surprised at the Mag spec as well. I may call back to have Mr Heller at mag reconfirm....

There is no difference in lens size between the old and new lenses for the mag. I measured with venier calipers at 22.3mm +/- 0.1 mm and 0.8mm thick.

PS if you fill the Opalec with epoxy it will cause the built in lens effect of the LED to disappear, so you would end up with a flood light. Might not be what you want.

Brinkmann is 22.2, the mag lens sure overlaps w/ it nicely... I am going for the 22.2 for my lights! Nice work Dave.
maybe mags specs haven't reached the production floor.

UPDATE: 22.2mm lens fits both Minimag and Legend AA.

I think the difference is noticeable...even with a new plastic lens, the transparency of glass is better.

I put lenses into my Newbeam mod...now I can clearly see the circuitry on the board. On my Lambda Illuminator, it is as if there is no lens covering the optic of the LS.

It is nice to know that these lenses will stay unmarred lots longer.

Did you order up a batch of these, or did you pay $5.69 shipping on a $2.50 order?
I'd like to get one, but I'd be inclined to order a bagful to distribute the shipping costs per unit-

I had got some 22.5mm lenses from Frei and Borel, Inc. and found a very small looseness in the fit in the AA minimags.
I am inclined to get the 22.6 the next time.
This is a great cheap mod along with the opalec newbeam - just about a perfect light... no lens scratches, no bulb replacement, long battery life, constant light output and red light warning when the batteries need replacing.

I ordered 22.8mm, and they fit nicely on Mini-Mag and Legend. I installed on at least 6 lights, no problem. They look clearer than plastic lens.

The replacement lens that came with my Newbeam measures 22.7mm, 0.8mm thick, so that should be a safe size to get.
I actually found a discernible difference in brightness as measured on my lightmeter when I lined the black housing with aluminum foil, to catch some of the side spill from the LED; it lets me go to 11 for that "little bit more"- it's feasible on this since it's all enclosed, unlike the Ultra.
