I went ahead and grabbed a Globe 2W E26 115vac bulb
which replaces the Sylvania version in one Canadian retailer;
at least another still carries the Sylvania bulb. Price is the same
all around, $10. Personally I think these should be half the
price considering their low power and brightness; hopefully
prices will be pushed down as better things come on the market.
The Globe version has very similar specs, but claims slightly
higher brightness (60 v. 50 lumens). In any case that's not great,
but works fine in certain locations. The bulb is called A19, but
is actually smaller, the size of a 25-40W appliance bulb, which
might make a difference in some fixtures.
This bulb, unlike the Sylvania, seems to have a glass shell. It
has an afterglow, and could actually be a disguised showerhead
bulb, which would fit with other Globe LED bulbs. The frosting
makes it very hard to see any detail, whereas looking into the
Sylvania unit through its plastic bulb one can clearly see a single
LED.
I'm holding off breaking the glass shell to see what's inside but
if anyone else is feeling adventurous, please tell us.
An old-style photo light meter was acquired a few months back
and is being used to measure relative brightness of this bulb and all
other ac LED bulbs I am using, over time. Only shortcoming is that
elapsed time is not being closely measured, just ballparking it.
