I posted someting similar in the General forum, but thought others in the Mod forum would like to know...

I don't know how many of you have a Big Lots store nearby, but the ones in my neighborhood have the Ray-o-vac black rubber 4AA flashlights AND the Greatland compass lights - your choice for $2.49. Both lights are rubber, use 4 AA cells in series, are short and stubby (very much like a Turtlelite or Dorcy Cool blue), and have a quality-feeling switch and a VERRRY tight beam. There are several posts in the forum on these lights.

They are also selling a 4-pack of Panasonic Ni-Mh cells, rated at 1600 mAh, for $4.99.

I bought 6 packs of the NiMh AAs and 3 of the flashlights. Can you say "Home-made Rechargable TurtleLight Supreme?

Sounds like a good torch for modding with InGaN technology...wouldn't advise installing a Luxeon in a rubber torch though...
it would be extremely hard to heatsink!
I have modded numerous torches with PR drop-ins and homemade bulb conversions but my favorite low cost conversion has to be my 2-nichia 3D. For it's £2.20 price you get a high quality torch with a dichroic-style faceted reflector and a rubberised switch a bit like a 2D Mag's switch, rubber gripping handle and a strong plastic lanyard. I dropped in a 2-nichia modded bulb to create an incrediblty powerful and useful torch. The LED's are Nichia's famous green 5000mcd devices... very bright indeed!
