That link shows what the woods lantern looks like and yeah I got it at a local canadian tire. not a bad deal even before the sale cause i compared the quality of this lantern to the coleman remote control and the coleman northstar (all three at the same price and available at the store for me to play with /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif). This one seems to blow them both away in both their areas. First the battery compartment doesn't use a battery jig like the colemans you basically put them into a ring inside the base and install the base on with a steel screw thingy in the middle of the base that lets you turn until the lid is secure underneath. The great thing about this cap is that there is a rubber gasket ring on the whole lid sealing it against a heavy rainstorm easily. Which both colemans did not have, any bit of water will leak easily into their battery compartment. And when you have to change the bulbs all you have to do is unscrew the top (which is also sealed with a rubber gasket!) and pull out the tubes, making it easy to change just like the northstar without tools while the remote coleman needs tools to change the bulbs. The tubes included are two 9watts by using both of them you get some really bright illumination (18 watts total baby!) over the 13watt northstar. I tested it in my room at night with the remote and it worked flawlessly, really lit up my room. and the dial switch on the top has a very solid click/snap into its different modes, more solid than the colemans knobby switch on the side. The Handle on the woods lantern is very thick and beefy wrapped in rubber for comfort without that flimsy feeling I received from the colemen remote (because of the screw handle it had) and better than the uncomfortable wire handle the northstar had.

The remote itself feels very nice in the hand and only runs on 2aaa batteries unlike the 12v battery you have to look around for on the coleman remote. The main deal maker for me is that this lantern ALSO comes with a 12v cigarette adapter so you can run this baby off the car OR the portable powerpacks you have!!! surely beats buying lots of D cells while you are car camping! I found that very versatile with the multi power source alternative given.

That's my review of this very nice light and i'm not sure if woods is a common camping brand down in the states like coleman. but i just wanted to show you guys some neat toys out there cause i picked it up and intend to use it on a boating/camping trip next month. it feels very solid with the bottom base wrapped in rubber and the plastic has a very solid feeling to it.

Just one question here for you guys.... The tubes that it comes with are U-tubes with 4 little pins. unlike the common 2 little pins on the side and one thick block in the middle. Is this a common fluorescent tube that you can buy in most places? cause i'm intending to put in some 7watt tubes instead so i can save on the power usage since 2x 9watts can make a very fast snack of your batteries without a powerpack! any help would be appreaciated if you can include links on where i can get these tubes. Thanks guys!

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

Oh one more thing in the remote control mode there is a little red led that stays lit so you can see where the lantern is in the dark.
not bad if you don't know which way you are pointing in the dark to turn on the lantern.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

Is the remote IR or RF? How large?

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

BTY, your link goes to the front page--not the item. Probably has something to do with Cookies...n stuff...

**EDIT**
IR remote /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif probably better for power consumption though.
Just do a search for "Remote Lantern" and put in your zip code (Took my US Zip code) and the lantern will pop right up.

What's wrong with IR remotes? How is RF better?

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

I am guessing 8 D cells? Does it have hi/low or full blast only?

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

IR is line of sight, RF is not. RF is just...niftier. Not that big a deal really.

Also, the Coleman remote is lots smaller.

Still looks like a nice lantern though, just depends on what you're going for.

Yup it runs on 8 D cells. The Hi/Low setting basically gives you full blast of one tube or Both tubes. That's why i'm looking for a lower wattage (around 7w) tube to save some power consumption when i go camping out there, and throw in the 9watts for picnics and car camping (i have those power packs that start cars with). as for the remote yeah it's a bit big like a 3 inch by 1 inch rectangle, big but not that bad. And it's IR not RF which i guess is why they have a little red led on it so you can actually point it at the lantern.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

Oh yesterday i did a runtime test on my lantern by running the 2 x 9watt tubes at full blast. I used some sanyo "generator" batteries in them, bought them sealed in original packaging at some flea market for like $20cdn for 8 of them! so i couldn't resist. Charged them up on my rc car charger, my charger read 2084 mah pumped into each cell before it peaked so it's not bad. Well from the moment i turned on both tubes while watching tv the lantern was fully lit, and started to dim at the 2 hr mark. I shut down from there or else risk damaging my tubes. Not bad it's like a 1Ah drain around so alkalines would easily last 16-17 hrs minimum, since energizers have a 18900mah capacity rating. right now i'm just wondering if the circuitry is the same as the coleman ones cause the northstar runs a 13watt tube for like 16-17hr on full power with alkalines also.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

Hey if you find a place to get these tubes (without the square block in the center) let me know. I have a 5w, 7w and 9w just like those, but they have the bluish tint to them. I prefer the warmer tint. It might be neat to run it with a 5w and 9w.

On a side note I have found swapping out lamps doesn't save as much power as I would have thought, only about 1/2 of what the tube wattage drops. I am guessing this is because the ballast is set for 9w?

For example
9w lamp 8 watts power
7w lamp 7 watts power
5w lamp 6 watts power

So it does use less and the lamp seems to light more fully on the lower wattage lamps. Then again every lantern is probably different.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

here ya go brock! i found a really nice site that carries these lamps and others.

http://www.purelampsupply.com/page8.shtml

go down to the single tube 4 pin base (ignore the pic it's wrong). The ones you are looking for are with a 2g7 base (i checked the diagram on my tube from a online OSRAM manual on the tube bases), well. that's the one mine uses because it has one tab on the flat side. i think it's the same as the coleman's you have. they have quite a selection even for the northstar lantern. i can get for mine the 5w, 7w, and 9w but the thing that really got me thinking is that you can choose the colour temp of the lamp. which would be a good choice? i'm leaning towards the neutral(3500K) and warm white(2700K) cause i'm not too keen on the cool white colour it's too cold looking. I'm going to order the 7watt(3500K) tubes thanks to your observations from your tests. I'll keep the 9watts for spare but with a 1000 hr lamp life i seriously doubt i'll have to worry soon unless i break them. I like fluorescents for the larger amount of light they give out with compared to incandescents on the same amount of power. It's very efficient lighting!

this is what you are looking for. also found out i could call 1-800-lightbulb which is the osram/sylvania customer help desk you can ask them for ordering. i'm going to order the 2700k 7watts here instead since they have a distributor in canada.

Edit: Called them up they don't sell personally and won't have any 7watts in until august 11. doh! but i called them up for stores that they sold this item to and two of the stores are waaay out west. hahahah! time to do more callings and hope they do mail orders.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

what about http://www.purelampsupply.com/page8.shtml can't you get the lamps from them or??

It might look odd to have a neutral or warm in the same lantern with the cool 9w, but oh well.

I think I might have to get one of these lamps and get a 5w and a 9w warm. hummmmmm

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

yup you can get them from purelampsupply, I started up my paypal account and should be ready for next week when i order them. but yeah a warm mixed with a cool colour would probably mix up into a neutral! yeah! plus it only takes a few seconds for me to swap around the lamps if i don't like one or the other. heh.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

Ok I just ordered a 7, 9 and 13 watt warm ones. I will see how they fit in the differnt lights.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

Well I got the warms, and they are warm, amber in color, I would say even lower in color temp then a regular incan. So now I have to get some med or neutral ones. The 13w ones don't fit because they have a double nub in the center part. I suppose I coud grind or cut the nubs off, but haven't yet.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

holy brock how many tubes are you ordering? heh. still experimenting for the perfect colour tone i see.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

Well I origionally ordered a 7, 9 and 13 warm. Now I just ordered 2 7's and 2 9's in the neutral color. I have 5 lights that take those type of lamps so I will use them for sure.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

neutral might be the best since you said the warm colours where a bit too far into the yellow spectrum. hopefully this one is neither blue or yellow but just plain white.

Re: Got myself a new remote fluorescen lantern!

Azreal911-
Question: what IS neutral white?? There is no such thing objectively, so everyone's idea of it may be different. In the lighting community something in the 4000K CCT region is taken to be neutral. But in the colour balancing industry (paint mixing, fabric dye mixing etc.) they use 5000K light sources .... so I am not sure! Direct sunlight on the earth's surface is arround 4500-5000K (location dependent!). Personally, I like the 4000K fluorescents. But then 3200K tungsten is nice too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
