That link shows what the woods lantern looks like and yeah I got it at a local canadian tire. not a bad deal even before the sale cause i compared the quality of this lantern to the coleman remote control and the coleman northstar (all three at the same price and available at the store for me to play with /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif). This one seems to blow them both away in both their areas. First the battery compartment doesn't use a battery jig like the colemans you basically put them into a ring inside the base and install the base on with a steel screw thingy in the middle of the base that lets you turn until the lid is secure underneath. The great thing about this cap is that there is a rubber gasket ring on the whole lid sealing it against a heavy rainstorm easily. Which both colemans did not have, any bit of water will leak easily into their battery compartment. And when you have to change the bulbs all you have to do is unscrew the top (which is also sealed with a rubber gasket!) and pull out the tubes, making it easy to change just like the northstar without tools while the remote coleman needs tools to change the bulbs. The tubes included are two 9watts by using both of them you get some really bright illumination (18 watts total baby!) over the 13watt northstar. I tested it in my room at night with the remote and it worked flawlessly, really lit up my room. and the dial switch on the top has a very solid click/snap into its different modes, more solid than the colemans knobby switch on the side. The Handle on the woods lantern is very thick and beefy wrapped in rubber for comfort without that flimsy feeling I received from the colemen remote (because of the screw handle it had) and better than the uncomfortable wire handle the northstar had.
The remote itself feels very nice in the hand and only runs on 2aaa batteries unlike the 12v battery you have to look around for on the coleman remote. The main deal maker for me is that this lantern ALSO comes with a 12v cigarette adapter so you can run this baby off the car OR the portable powerpacks you have!!! surely beats buying lots of D cells while you are car camping! I found that very versatile with the multi power source alternative given.
That's my review of this very nice light and i'm not sure if woods is a common camping brand down in the states like coleman. but i just wanted to show you guys some neat toys out there cause i picked it up and intend to use it on a boating/camping trip next month. it feels very solid with the bottom base wrapped in rubber and the plastic has a very solid feeling to it.
Just one question here for you guys.... The tubes that it comes with are U-tubes with 4 little pins. unlike the common 2 little pins on the side and one thick block in the middle. Is this a common fluorescent tube that you can buy in most places? cause i'm intending to put in some 7watt tubes instead so i can save on the power usage since 2x 9watts can make a very fast snack of your batteries without a powerpack! any help would be appreaciated if you can include links on where i can get these tubes. Thanks guys!
