Help Support Candle Power:

http://gpsinformation.net/ is by far the most thorough GPS buff site. There's also a newsgroup, sci.geo.satellite-nav, which has knowledgeable posters.

I use an old Garmin 12XL but these days I'd probably get a Geko 201 just because it's so small. The mapping units do seem a lot nicer though, if you don't mind the size.

TIN,

I've had my 60C for a couple of months and just love it! I use it for auto routing, hiking, geocaching and bicycling.

A couple of suggestions: Buy the City Select software because the autorouting doesn't work very well without it. You can get the software with the auto kit that includes a power port cord and a lead bean bag base.

The screen colors are impressive and so is the battery life.

My only reservations about getting this unit was the limited memory. I'm hoping it turns out not to be an issue for me. I travel allot, so my plan was to use this GPS to get from the airports to the hotels to the places I need to drive to.

I've owned the StreeetPilot III Deluxe - a product for which we were hired to deliver evaluations and recommend improvements. This is primarily an Automotive GPS but with appropriate Maps downloaded to the removable 128MB card, it can be used for Pedestrian, City, Topographic and Marine navigation as well. The UI and Interaction model of the SP III are/were rather poor and latency makes usability sluggish- but it works and of course, it has 'voice' output (a highly desireable feature in the Car/Motorbike) removable 128MB card and the colormap screen. We helped Garmin improve on the SP III to produce the 2620/2610/2650 series - which we feel eliminated most if not all of the SPIII's usability & Human Factors problems in addition to adding a faster processor and larger Memory card. Thanks to 6-AA battery back-up power, all these units are excellent -if heavy- for Handheld use as well as Bicycle & Motorcycle use. For lightweight highly mobile and especially handheld use, a better alternative to the 2620 is the > iQue 3600 < Integrated PDA/GPS from Garmin. It contains many of the same features of the larger Auto models in a lighter/sleeker form factor (uses internal LioN Battery + 12VDC) . All these units contain state of the art technology for minimized location error and maximized accuracy . There are other handheld Garmin solutions as well - such as the Rino and Navtalk GSM series - but they lack voice output and tend to sacrifice GPS functionality for other factors . In all Garmin products, PC users are highly advantaged over Mac users for interface- since Garmin has closed the source code to it's file transfer protocol to the Mac OS or even to Win2000/NT running on Virtual PC (not 100% verified) . I'm planning on buying the iQue 3600 to back-up my Palm M-500 and avoid having to lug my SP III around on trips to Europe - it should be great. I'm certain that other companies also have viable alternatives to Garmin's- but I can't offer information on them. IMHO-Of all my recent experience with technology tools- GPS is one of the most helpful to the individual and to society and the GPS/PDA combo- puts 2 of the most helpful technologies in one package. If you have any questions, please ask us in outline form here or via PM. Also search on Google for forums of GPS users and Garmin.com if you like thier flavor of products.
BTW- Is there a GPS forum in CPF ???

I just borrowed a Garmin 76CS from a co-worker and liked it for the most part. He chose it over the 60CS because of waterproofness and larger memory. I prefer the buttons on the bottom like the 60CS but I am worried about running out of memory when loading maps for driving in multiple regions.
