Reminds me of the story of how Arthur C. Clarke came up with the name "HAL". If you subtract one letter from each of I-B-M, you come up with:
I B M
-1 1 1
-------
H A L ( tack on 9000 and there you have it)
Now, ever wonder how Windows NT (WNT) was named? Similar way, but add a letter to VMS and get:
V M S
1 1 1
-------
W N T
VMS was and still is a very good operating system, with a guy named Dave Cutler one of its architects. Dave moved on to Microsoft from DEC in 1988 and was one of the architects of their new OS. He took what was done with HAL and applied it to WNT.
Wonder how many here ever heard of VMS before? Its now named OpenVMS, but most of us that have been around for awhile, consider the Open silent.
