I have an HDS EDC 42XR as well as a Novatac 120P on order. I wanted to get some other people's opinions on the tail switch. It makes me nervous that the tail switch is so easy to press, and a single click will turn on the light. Does anyone out there carry one of these in the pocket? If so, ever have a problem with the light turning on by accident?

Obviously people's opinions will be based on the HDS, since the Novatac hasn't shipped yet, but I assume the switch will be similar.

You can activate the button lock or disable the force setting. Go to the lowest brightness level before turning off. If the light is turned on accidental in your pocket, it is not really tragic on lowest level. :)

As already stated, just use the "automatic button lock", which is option 5 in the option menu.

This prevents accidental activation. In that mode the light must be triple-clicked to turn it on.

I always pocket carry my lights and have never had any of them turn on acccidentally. Of course my light is the only thing in the pocket so there is really no danger of accidental activation. As mentioned already you can activate the button lock or if you do not want to click 3 times to turn it on you can also enable the automatic off as well. Do you have an ultimate or a basic model? I do not know if you are aware but If you have a basic model, you can access the options menu using 250 clicks.
http://www.hdssystems.com/Obsolete/XEdcUltimateUsersGuide.pdf wherever you see 10 clicks substitute 250 clicks.

The NovaTac switch will be very similar to the HDS switch. While I never have carried the HDS in my pocket (I use a belt pouch) I'm not sure it would turn on that easily and, if it did, I suspect it just might warm my "self" enough for me to turn it off. :naughty: I do agree with the automatic lockout use however. I use it for mine.

I have the Basic 42 XR. I did read somewhere about the 250 clicks trick, but I think I'll wait for the Novatac to arrive before I program the light.

The button lock will work for pocket carry, I suppose. I love how easy the single click is to turn on the light, and I think 3-clicking might get annoying. Regardless, I have an answer to my question...if I'm worried about it, use the button lock. Thanks for the responses!

I have pocket carried a HDS EDC for a long time and NEVER had the light activate unless I wanted it to. This includes having other items in the pocket as well.

Now the T model of the Novatac lights may be more susceptible to to this due to the bigger button.

And you don't use the button lock? This is good to hear, although a little surprising. A single click, not much pressure, is all it takes so I'm surprised you've never found it on in your pocket.

If you are using primaries you can unscrew the head a bit and lock it out.
Don't do this with partially depleted rechargables though.

Or you can slip a SF F04 Beamshaper over the tail. Handy thing to have and it keeps the button from being pressed.
