Headlamp bands?

Would it be entirely foolish of me to think that I could rig a makeshift headlamp from a mini-maglite or similar 2AA LED light, a couple rubber o-rings, and a normal headlamp band? I'm guessing I'd have a hard time getting it to point in the direction I want.

Anyone know where could I find the headlamp band? Also, if this is as foolish as I think it might be, does anyone have recommendations for a light, comfortable headlamp that doesn't look too flashy? And why is it that all the ones I'm interested in use odd numbers of batteries? I'm planning to use NiMH and you're not supposed to charge an empty with a full...

My main use for this headlamp is to stow in my backpack for emergency repairs while I'm out on my motorcycle. I might also bring it with me while riding on my bicycle if it turns out to be very convenient.

Google JakStrap. both JakStrap and NiteIze makes headbands for flashlights.

i prefere the JakStrap and JakStrap II over the NiteIze. The NiteIze only points straight ahead and the headband is non-elastic in nature. the two JakStrap bands are elastic with velcro closure and adjustment for head circumference.

you could simply get some elastic material at someplace like Jo-anne fabrics or a department store.

i've used such material to add loops at various angles, as often 30deg or 45deg declination is more useful than pointing straight ahead.

the JakStrap has two loops for smaller diameter flashlights only - one pointing straight ahead and one 45deg downward. the JakStrap II has only one elastic+velcro adjustable loop (so both small diameter and larger diameter flashlight may be retained) which points 45deg downward.

the NiteIze has two concentric elastic bands pointing, as was mentioned above, straight ahead. the two bands allow either a small flashlight or a larger diameter flashlight to be retained.

online retailiers that sell backpacking gear (e.g. Campmor.com and REI.com, as well as others) sell one or both brands.

innermountainoutfitters.net (a caving supply online retailer) sells the JakStrap II headband.
