This must be a record, i killed my new BB750 in less than 5 min. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
I put the BB in my minimag just to see that it was very bright /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif !!!.
Next steep , i put the BB into my Firefly ... no light ; ok i think that i had to make the "solder blob" , i used my solder station ( 25 Watt , 24 Volt temp-controlled ) and made the solder blob taking the tip of the iron on the BB for no more than 2 sec. but ... when i put the BB into the FF still no light, i put the BB into the Minimag and only a orrible 10 lux light come from the led.
A quick visual inspection and i realized that there was a component on the BB that "melted" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif.
What happened ? is the led still ok ? can the BB be repaired ? Can someone help me ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif

It is the little black component .... soldered on the BB in the middle of the pic !

O.K., I'm not sure I'm correct here, but based on the Badboy layout, it looks like the schottky diode is blown. I can't imagine your minimal soldering the positive button did that. I hope you can have it repaired.

This is I think the 2nd occurance like this. It sounds like the LED shorted to the rim inside the FF. If so, I think someone should contact Doug S and have him confirm the LED diameter hole vs a MM or Brinkmann 2AA.

I'm not sure what I can do. I'd love to replace this module, but, if it was caused by the FF then I think the support issue lands with Doug S.

Hi Wayne,

i think that you are right, the failure was caused by the rim of the Firefly but other MM's and BB's worked ok with my FF and this BB750 is IMHO a little "out of standard" as you can see from the pic, the 2 board of the sandwich are not parallel...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Miciobigio,

Yes, you are correct, the two boards are not parallel. But, that is not a specification the modules carry.

Just because the Firefly requires a solder blob and parallel boards was never part of the original modules as I build them.

I make no claim the boards are parallel and they actually work just fine as is slightly crooked or not in the configuration it was designed for. That's the 2AA configuration.

To claim the module is out of spec is incorrect. You might say the Firefly is out of spec since the FF was built around the module and not the other way around.

The firefly returns and exceptions are now costing me time and money.

For whatever reason, I'm going to have to take a hard line and say, if you want the boards parallel, that will take additional process and inspection which in the end will require me to make a separate product and charge more for it.

I'm sorry to have to take this hard line, but, now I'm supporting the firefly when I only supplied modules to Doug S for his effort and support. I really think you should take this up with Doug and see what he can do for you.

In the meantime I will try my best in future assemblies to attempt to hold the parallism better, but, cannot gurantee that will be true today or in the future since I make some and I contract out to have these made.

The modules are already a very labor intensive assembly and the cost per profit margin is very low considering the scrappage rate and the actual number of steps involved in making these.

Hi Wayne,

you are correct, for this reason the subject of my post say that "I Killed ..." and i've written that i put the BB in my minimag and it was very white and very, very bright.

It is a my bad, and i'm not searching for a replace from you, i'm searching for someone that want to try to help me, i received a PM from a CPF-user and i'm going to the post office to send him this BB and another MM+ that i have "killed".

My real bad is that i do not know that not every sandwich fits in the Firefly .... but this is my fault.

Wayne, i 'm a fan of yours and love your work , and the only thing that i want to tell to Doug S. is "THANK YOU for making the Firefly , it's around my neck 7/7 24/24 " /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Happy new year to all.

This Doug S is going to have to take a hard line on these modules too as I don't give a rat's *** about your module problems /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
The Doug S that Wayne is referring to is CPF member DSpeck.

Sorry,

my bad. Sorry Doug S.

Wayne

Miciobigio, Send me an email and I will fix you up with another module from the next run.
