I installed 4 low voltage potlights by Contrast in my kitchen and purchased an electronic dimmer to control them. When I removed the existing wall switch to install the low voltage electronic dimmer I realized this dimmer needs a neutral, and the switch box has only red and black (the neutral must have been terminated somewhere else in a junction box somewhere in my kitchen walls).

My electrician friend suggests that I try a magnetic dimmer, but I read here: http://www.ylighting.com/dimmers.html and here:http://www.lumetro.com/store/catalog/Lighting-Information-sp-18.html that electronic transformers need electronic dimmers.

Anyone know if a magnetic dimmer will work in this application?

You have to match dimmer with transformer. If you don't, you will not get 'proper' dimming if at all. There will a compatability issue. Have you dble checked to make sure that 'red' wire wasn't a neutral?. I've seen it before where a color that's supposed to be used for something else, is used for a ground, hot or nuetral. Sad really.
