/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gifI need to project an image onto a hill and I'm not sure what I'm going to need to do this. Can anyone help me out with this one? AND is 5 million candle power a lot or not any use for projecting a decent distance?
Thanks!

Please don't do that! Ugh! It's like going around with one of those loudspeaker trucks advertising something. Some of us actually like it to be dark out at night! Yes, flashaholics should appreciate and embrace natural darkness the same way a musician appreciates natural silence. It's difficult enough as it is to go outside anywhere near a populated area and not have your night vision messed up by houselights, cars, etc. Projecting some advertising images on hillsides is an awful idea!

See http://www.darksky.org for more info.

I understand your point and you are right the said hill I am projecting onto is directly behind the club, which I add has numerous spotlights lighting up the night sky. So you see I am not going to be spoiling a beautiful naturally lit landscape, but simply adding my club logo to an already lit (by the local authorities) area! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, a flashlight is probably not what the doctor orders here. How close can you get to the hill? You can probably find a lighting rental company and rent a 1000+ watt light that holds a gobo to project the image. You might only need 750 watts if you can get within 60 feet of where you want to project the image onto.

Doing a search on google for lighting rental scotland brought up several companies.

I work for a company that does this sort of thing, but Scotland is a bit of a drive from Louisiana. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you can rent an intelligent light such as a Cyberlight or Studio Spot you can have several gobos projected and have them moving around to get more attention.

Thanks!
Thats really helpful, I'll give those links a try and see what comes up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Projecting on to an unreflective surface like a hill in a high ambient light enviroment takes a lot of power.

Few years back rotating shapes onto Salsibury Crags here in Edinburgh took a Strong Gladiator with a 2.5Kw Xenon lamp. These are huge folowspots, 6.5` long, used in stadiums from the other end of the stadium from the stage.

Don`t think a 750W Source 4 is going to cut it, TBH, 1.2Kw discharge lamp or 2Kw halogen with a narrow lens on it should work but the image will possibly be samller than you would like and you`ll need to keep it in open white to stay bright.

Moving mirror lite like a Cyber or preferably a NAT 4K or moving body light like a MAC2000 might do the trick, but you`ll need to get the gobo made and then pay for an expensive light rental.

Better projecting on to the outside of the building with your logo and using some flood lighting sequenced on to the hill behind, with PAR64s or someat, which are an affordable hire.

Main names in lighting rental in Edinburgh are probably:

have a flick through yellow pages as well, sometimes the smaller companies can be more helpful......

Hey!
What did you project onto Sal. Crags?, the "hill" I am referring to is Aurthurs' Seat. I cant believe someone else from Edinburgh has spotted this.:p What kind of permission did you need for the images on the crags? I'm not too sure how I should be going about it myself.

Hey, it`s a small world :-)So what club are you trying to promote, can`t think of anything in immediate vicinity of Holyrood Park?

The Crags project was nowt to do with me, it was part of the Lux Europa project. Various outdoor lighting projects across Edinburgh, there was a tourist slide show on to the castle rock as well as others. Some worked better than others thats for sure, some of the sponsors refused to pay up when they saw the results.....

The Grags was originally going to be a clock but they had some difficulty getting something that could take the heat in the gate of a Gladiator. It ended up as a rotating oblong and triangle projected from pair of Gladiators on a scaff tower about where the play park is at Dumbiedykes.A very, very expensive pair of rotating shapes.

Commercial advertising in the Park will be no go at all, I`ve been pulled over by the Park constabularly for driving a lettered vehicle in the Park.As it`s a Royal Park Historic Scotland look after it on behalf of the Queen.

Additionally with something that may shine into the sky you need to inform the Civil Aviation Authority,CAA, as it may present a nuisance to aircraft.

Aurthurs seat is about 850` tall above sea level, close projection points are few and far between though, so that is why in the Crags example Gladiators had to be used.It gets into using multi kilowatt xenon sources where a spare lamp that will last mebbe 250 hours is £2,500 plus the unit it plugs into.Hire charges are big.

So would honestly rule out Aurthur`s Seat as a possible , and its a nature reserve.

Another example of how big projection eats up power and cash is the Three Sisters Pub in Cowgatw, they have had various go`s with moving lites projecting on the wall above the beer garden, none have been entirely satisfactory, with projection there is no such thing as too much power.

What seem popular at the moment are Space Flower type searchlight effects:

Rental costs are still high but a proven attention getter, don`t forget to plant the standard UFO sightings in the local papers ;-)

Or projection onto buldings around Edinburgh, need a van or pickup with a generator onboard and a bright moving light, x-spot mac2000 or similar for ease of lining up when you park, or possibly just a 2k profile spot and jump out and focus manually or from rear doors of vehicle and a good camera to get those important publicity shots.Getting hassled by the cops is part of the fun and remember to tell the papers....

This one is possibly best one with a level of affordability, look around for buildings with big flat surfaces and somewhere to park in range and square on for a bit.

Could be a fun project, if you need more help my email is in my profile.

Have you noticed the two projections onto the Cowgate from the Caberet Voltaire on Blair Street? One of the guys who helps with the flyers got caught running off with one of the lamps on Friday, pretty hilarious considering the weight of the things and the size of the two bouncers who gave chase! It was something like that I was after (however, said incident was nothing to do with me! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif). The van sounds plausable though. You must have noticed the multi-coloured spotlights directed at the sky from Teviot Row some weekends and especially during the festival, if that has permission, which it must have, surely one more wouldn't cause too much of a headache to the Edinburgh City Council. The club at the moment is going to be at the Wee Red Bar, since La Belle Angele burnt down the competition are using most of the suitable places, theres been a distinct lack of venues. There are however many ideal buildings which leads me to believe that a mobile projector is the way to go, I'll have to speak to some of the guys first but it sounds like a great idea, you seem to know what youre doing, something which cannot be said for myself so I might need to contact you for more info on cost and availability of equiptment. The next night is this week so I'll just have to make do with 500 glowsticks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif, but the night is held monthly so I hope to have something organised for then.
Thanks for the help!
