I am looking for some new AA cells to replace my 8-9 year old 1700 Evereadys. I am looking for as much mah capacity as possible (~2700 ball park) and low self discharge. Does such a cell exist?

Does such a cell exist?

Heh heh. To give you the short answer: no. Such a cell does not exist.

As the saying goes, "There is no such thing as a free lunch."

To get 2700 mAh capacity into an AA cell other things have to be sacrificed, and the things sacrificed include robustness, low internal resistance, lifetime, and low self-discharge.

If you want solid, reliable cells that will perform well, have low self-discharge and take abuse, get Eneloops. The nominal 2000 mAh capacity is the price you pay for the other benefits. :)

I would say one thing... how often do you need to recharge batteries you are replacing? If your answer it once in a week or less with huge emphasis on LESS... it may be better to go with the high capacity non LSD cells because many brands wont self discharge down to the level of the LSD cells in that short of a time thus being more capacity overall and possibly cheaper. If you recharge once every 2-3 weeks or more.... the LSD ones probably be more useful. Especially if you are finding you have to recharge before you use the item or it dies too fast from self discharge over time. You may find a use for the 1700s. I have lots of small nimh AAs I put in stuff like taplights and cheap flashlights I use on occasion and leave the nice batteries for things that I enjoy more and need longer runtimes.

I'm looking to replace my old AA NiMhs too. Are the Maha Imedions any good or are the Eneloops still the way to go?

I've been using the Delkin LSD NiMh AA. It has 2300 mAh, which is only a little more than the Eneloop. I purchased it not too long ago, so I can't say how good they are.
