Higher output version of LM317?

I remember reading somewhere that National makes a version of the LM317 that is good for up to 5 amps, (or was it 3?) instead of 1.5 amps like the 317. Can anybody tell me what the part number is for this, and if the schematic is exactly the same for it to operate in constant current mode?

Assuming a TO220 package, the LM338 is the 5 amp version.

And the LM350 is the 3 amp version.

Yes, the schematic for the '338 and '350 in constant current mode is the same as the '317.

Is the only difference between the 317 and 338 that the 338 has higher output? Wouldn't the 338 work anywhere the 317 would, and more? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Basically, yes.
You will have to dissipate the extra heat it will generate, though.
