Does anyone here know the name of the home lighting system that uses an led light source and fiber optic cables to direct that light to different places in the home? I've heard of systems like this, but I don't know the name of the system.

Thanks

I've heard of it with 1 Incandessent (Heck, or even Compact Flouressent) and then lots of fiber optics, but never LEDs and fiber optics. That'd be cooool though.

The microstar is actually a LED though, not LED+Fiber. Don (McGizmo) can and, if I can help it, will tell us all about it--I think he basically designed it.

StayInTheLight,

Most of the fiberoptic kits I have seen consist of a high power halogen light source in a box and then ports for feeding fiber optic cables to remote fixtures. I have not run across any kits using LED's as the light sources but with this new technology, I would not be surprised if there aren't infact some out there doing it.

I would suspect that a google on fiber-optic lighting would bring in a few hits. I have done a few things with LED's and fiberoptics with very satisfactory results but in many cases, the combination doesn't provide the luminous output required.

We sell a fibreoptic kit at work (I manage a HiFi store). It consists of around 100 strands of optic fibre that hook up to a box with 4 bright LED's (I assume Nichia's).

Basically it's for creating a 'Starry Night' effect in home theatres, you put the box in your ceiling cavity and, useing a SMALL drill bit feed the ends of the fibre through the ceiling plasterboard. It's available in plain white or in colours that cycle through the spectrum. Quite effective if not something that would actually light up a room.

Brandon.

Brandon, can you provide more info about the kit you have at work. Manufacturer, model, price, etc?
