I am awaiting a DX P7 on a 21mm base but am now thinking I may need to use the bare emmitter on a larger heat sink for a M@g lite conversion.
How can i safely remove the emmiter from the sink? Is it just soldered on or is it glued on too?
Is it possible to glue this heat sink to a larger one or will that just be too inefficent?

Re: Removing P7 from base

You should be able to just unsolder it from the base. All of the LED's I have worked with from DX had just heat sink grease, not thermal epoxy.

Use thermal epoxy to secure it to the new base.

[FONT=&quot]The led was still connected to the base while the lens came off. gone $23

Er... If you mean "Star" when you say base, then this is nice to hear.
Cause this means they actually solder the base of the leds onto the star (which helps a lot with heat transfer).

If you want to remove it, just put it on a hot-plate and try to lift the led of, carefully. Ramp the temperature up rather quickly, so the LED doesnt stay hot too long.

I was in the same boat as you. $23 gone in the drain because i messed up trying to remove the LED from the star. The lens came off and the wires ripped :(

I bought a new bare emitter from kaidomain also. :p Just got it a few days ago and threw it in my mag 2d running on 1 li-ion

Mine is going to be arrived next week, I was thinking about remove it from the base as well. Sound like I need to be careful I thought it was a piece of cake.
