I put the stove on max for a while, then put the star on it and make sure that I have the emitter in a safe grip with pliers and just lift it off the pcb the same instant when the solder melts. Then I drop the emitter on a cold metal surface. It only takes a few seconds in total if your stove top/boiler plate is hot enough. Never lost any emitters this way. I reflow the same way, except backwards of sorts..
