How do you unsolder a Cree XR-E from a PCB?

I have a Cree XR-E on a 15mm PCB and want to unsolder it. What is the best way to do this?

Make sure it hasn't taken in any moisture from the atmosphere.

It would be a good practice to bake the emitter (about 2-4 hours at 60-80C), or simply run it at moderate output for a couple hours before desoldering.

Otherwise the moisture turns into vapor and delaminates the board or dome.

I think I will try it with the electrical oven I the kitchen. First put the star on the oven at low and then turn the oven on high and try to take the emitter of the star.

How high does your oven go? :faint:
 
The oven wasn't free at the moment so I used a heat gun. And thanks to your trick it work very well and there was no damage to the emitter. I heated the star a little bit up at 150 degree and then turn the temperature up to 400 degree and the emitter fell off within 10 seconds.

I put the stove on max for a while, then put the star on it and make sure that I have the emitter in a safe grip with pliers and just lift it off the pcb the same instant when the solder melts. Then I drop the emitter on a cold metal surface. It only takes a few seconds in total if your stove top/boiler plate is hot enough. Never lost any emitters this way. I reflow the same way, except backwards of sorts..
 
now a stupid question: is there an easy way to mount reflectors to an individual cree? the fraen ones I have clip around the dome and the soldering process is kinda OK; I was thinking about replacing with stars for this. Or did I miss something? How do you guys use the bare emitters?
