On the Pila web site they compare all of their models. In all but their 3 series, they either put in different lamp assembly to achieve the same output with rechargeables or the output is just less with rechargeables.
However in their 3 series, they claim same light output regardless. They confirmed this in an email to me but will not say how they do this. In these lights you can use either 3x123 cells or 2 of their 3.7v lithium Ion cells.
What do you think?
It's unlikely that they are using some kind of boost circuit built into the 9v lamp assembly otherwise why dont they use it in all of their models without changing lamp assmebly or having to endure lower output?

The 3 x 123´s under load are around that voltage as well

Klaus is exactly right. I am running a P91 lamp with 2x18500 1600mAH Li-Ion cells with great results. The 123's sag enough under load that 2 lithium ions in a high current application will perform similarly to 3x123.
