How secure are clips on belts?

I've always EDC small single AA or 123 lights in a pouch. Never lost one.

I see lots of lights supplied with a clip such as the Quarks. How secure are these clips on belts? Any problems with it being knocked out off the belt?

Thanks,
Moses

I clip flashlights inside a pocket or onto something for hands-free use. I'd be reluctant to clip a light directly to my belt. Holsters work better for me for belt carry.

Same here. . . I clip my EDC light and my EDC knife on the inside of my pants pocket. You'd probably have to have a very thin belt to clip it onto a belt for most of the lights I've seen.

It depends on the clips. I have seen some really flimsy clips on some lights. On the other end, you have clips which are so tight they will chew through whatever you are trying to clip them to.

Having said that, I echo the sentiments of chaosmagnet. I usually use a clip to either clip the light to my pocket or to the bill of a cap, etc. If I carry a light on my belt, it is usually in a holster.

Surefires E series short clips are quite firm for thinner belts, so snug at times that it leaves wear marks on the belt just after a couple uses. for thicker belts like fossil or what not longer clips help, but its not as secure and can easy be pushed off the belt from the side.

I think of the clips as being useful for keeping the light in a known position at the top of a pocket or in a bag. I wouldn't trust them to keep something hanging where it could be snagged by everyday stuff (seatbelts, hallway corners, groping hands, etc). I use them in the same way as the clips on folding knives.

The clip on my Romisen RC-A4 is rediclously tight. I can barely even get it to budge. I would have absolutely no concerns what-so-ever about it breaking or losing grip on my belt.

I've heard that some clips have their screws loosen over time, but I can't speak on that because I basically never use my clip.

.
If you sit down in an arm chair , the arm of the chair may catch on and push up , anything clipped to your belt , without you knowing it .

I beg to differ. :nana:

Good clip in a way that it hang on to its life on my belt.
But something has to give.....

I regularly carry a SF L1 and C2 on my belt. I find that although the short clip of the L1 has bit bit stronger/firmer of a grip, it isn't long enough to go completely over the belt, so it tends to get knocked off more easily than the C2. By contrast, the C2 is more easily knocked out of position (sliding forward or back, or even slightly up and towards getting un-clipped), but it almost never does so without being easily noticed and rectified. So, the short clip may stay put more often, but when it moves, it's much more likely to fall off the belt altogether. (I keep both lights on lanyards, tethered to a belt loop, just in case.)

Basically, if the clip seems sufficiently sturdy, and it's long enough to clear the belt fully, then I'd be comfortable clipping the light to my belt (even without a tether). If, however, it's too short for that, then I'll still clip it to the belt for convenience, but only if it's tethered to me so I don't lose it.

I carried a CL1H on my belt for quite some time with its clip, its a very solid and well-built clip but after doing the "armchair thing" and completely destroying it, twice! I decided to get a good holster for it and haven't had any trouble since.

It all depends on the light and its clip.

The clip on my Maratac AAA is too lightweight to hold securely; I've had the light clipped inside my pants pocket and the clip caught something, next thing I know I hear the light hitting the floor.

By contrast, the D10 clip is nice and tight, and goes against the knurling besides. I don't think anything could budge it... it's hard enough pulling it out of my pocket when clipped in, and I worry that I'm abrading the fabric with the knurling. I'm not sure the clip will fit on a belt, but if it does, I doubt it could ever get bumped off.
