How to determine what a resistor\'s specs are ???

I have alot of old electronics around that are not in use, and most are broken.
I was thinking of going threw them, and parting them out. Mainly for resistors and such. Most are old VCRs and computer motherboards.
I am pretty sure that I can take a DMM and it will tell me the resistors Ohm rating, but, wouldnt I have to know what wattage I am supposed to be feeding the resistor?

How do I go about finding out what resistors I have?
If I recall correctly, I would need to know two things to know what resistor I have. Watts and Ohm rating for it, correct?

The colored bars tell you what resistance value (ohms), and the variance (5%, 1%, etc). The package size and appearance will determine how much power can be dissipated.

For color decoding, just google "resistor color codes".

Larger resistors (such as the blocky sand epoxy resistors) will have the resistance and power dissipation labeled right on them.

PPC users -- here's a neat little program for calculating the value baesd on the color codes.

AHHH DUH !!
I forgot to ask about the color codes hehe. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif

I wasnt sure if all of them had them, and if they were,, reliable, and a standard.

That program, and website look great, thanks alot guys. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

So, is there no good way to do it with a DMM if need be?

boy, wouldn't it be nice if someone were to make a nice executable program for this? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

LOL NO! Im not doing it. hehe

Besides, my last one didnt get a whole lotta responce. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

Resistor color code: black (0), brown (1), red (2), orange(3), yellow (4), green (5), blue (6), violet (7), grey (8), white (9). BBROYGBVGW. Famous mnemonic is "Bad boys rape our young girls but violet gives willingly".

Power rating: uh, basically it goes by the physical size of the resistor. The little teeny ones are 1/8 watt, the small ones are 1/4 watt, etc. Go to Radio Shack and look at a few of them so you'll know what they look like.
