What is the best battery choice that will give me the longest regulated runtime and the total voltage being under 13volts?

Hi,

What I know it's 12Ah NiMh D cells. They ought to provide 4-5 hours regulated runtime.

You don't think lithium ion would give longer runtime or maybe 1/2 d cell nimh?

1/2D-cells will not provide the same amount of energy as D-cells for the same length, the highest value I have seen is 3,5mAh. About Lithium the only I know are 3,6V and would exceed the 13V limit.
