Idea behind the L1/L2/A2 tailcap design?

I've been wondering why the L1/L2/A2 is designed with the big groove in the tailcap.

While the lanyard kit for those lights is groovey, it seems like a pretty big design feature for it to be there solely for the lanyard kit.

Does it seem there were some ideas for some other things to use this groove?

Or was the new lanyard design idea simply soo groovey that the light was designed to accept it?

Thanks,

John, you should read Chris M.'s thread active at this very moment!

It's for the Z60 Lanyard Kit:

Of course, you don't have to attach the lanyard - it has an excellent clip for easy attach/detach...

Or you can remove it altogether:

John,

I believe the groove was initially designed for accepting a ruber guard like those present on the older style "clasic" clickies (Al can provide part numbers and pictures /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

However, it is a feature in the cap that does allow for the Z60 and who know what else might pop up down the road! It certainly makes for a viable attachment point! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

In the herb fogs that ensconce SureFire proto-types the two-stage switch TailCap (what is now the Z62) did feature a rubber shroud - not as thick and deep as those of the SW02/Z48/Z49 Clickies and this is why it was not released - no obvious advantage to to it...

In fact, the first time I handled a proto-type with it on I took the shroud off.

I use the slot on my L1-PR-T 917 to attach a custom lanyard to. If the breakaway clip was readily available, I would use that.

I find that having a neck lanyard is essential to using this light. There is a happy mediun between proctecting your high end light and using your light w/o damaging it.

otherwise this light would be a safe queen, instead of it being used all the time.
