Re: Tracking light Ideas?
welcome to cpf Jason, sounds like you need a lot more lumens than any one 3watt can possibly put out.
what you need is a high bin 5watt like Surefire U2 or 3x C cell direct drive, tri-luxeon reflector light in a tactical body. that way you can get 200+ lumens of throw with a large enough hotspot to matter.
Barbolight U-09 meets the bill. output is very close to Surefire M6 w/lola with very simular quality of build. Price is also simular to Surefire at $270+
Real world runtime is aprox. 2 hours of bright + lots more runtime at good brightness using 5 amp hour NMH C cells. Carry an extra set of cells and you got 4+ hours of bright runtime.
KevinL just posted a tri-lux 3x C cell m*glite build from a kit that will do the job. it will not have the tuff hard anodized build that Barbolight U-09 has but at way less cost.
either one of these tri-luxeon reflectored lights will destroy a FT-3C or single 3watt m*glite mod.
here are some links to get started Barbolight U-09 Tri-luxeon M*glite 3x C cell mod
Another possiblity is Surefire U2 running off pila li-ion 168A. carrying extra charged li-ion cells would give you 4+ hours of runtime. setup cost would be high, but runtime would be free. U2 has excellent throw with the best brightness of any production single 5watt LED light.
Barbolight U-09 will outperform U2 by quite a margin running cheap C cell nmh. But Barbolight will not have the support Surefire can give.
For your 150+ lights application you need real time manufactor support that a small mfg or modder would have a hard time delivering. Barbolight U-09 is made by a small mfg out of Spain. Custom modded lights with no support will be questionable at best.
Please PM if you need further assistance.
here is pic to show size comparison. from left to right
1. Surefire M6
2. custom Surefire L5 turbo w/X4T, 3+ hours runtime on 168a pila
3. Barbolight U-09
4. Surefire U2
5. Pila 168A li-ion cell
