I\'m addicted

Great forum! I started out last week just innocently buying a LW2000, pretty impressed. I got a CMG Reactor coming on Thursday. I ordered 10 Nichia (sp?) White leds on ebay and will start experimenting. Picked up a blue 1600mcd led at RS today to test in the simple one transistor booster circuit - getting ready for the arrival of the white ones. I was fairly pleased, got about 3 hours of bright light from a single AA alkaline, but I think I'll use 2 AA's and pack the circuitry in the head. This is some interesting stuff, can't believe there are so many people with this common interest! Attached is my ugly prototype of a single AA running the RS blue led near battery death (1.1V) after 3 hours. I can see how this stuff gets addicting!

Re: I\'m addicted

Hello Rob,

Welcome.

You may find that you have to loosen up your wallet, or get a second job. This addiction has a bit of a price to it... but it is a lot of fun.

Nice mod. Keep up the good work and let us know what you come up with.

Tom

Re: I\'m addicted

Thanks for the welcome messages! I've looking for a reason to spend some time in the garage tinkering, I think I've found it. It seems most guys here use 3 or 4 cell (or more) flashlights for mods. Seems too easy. I think I'll concentrate on DC-DC converters with some of the chips that I've read about, to try and get a decent efficiency. That one transistor booster is terribly inefficient, although it supplies 4.75VDC pulses at about 80kHz. Haven't figured out yet how to measure the current. It's still lit with the AA cell at 1.0 Vdc, which means I'll be able to use all the NiMH cells I just bought for the Hurricane season.
