Kind of excited to be buying my second LED light and a better quality
one than I have currently.
Up here we have the Surefire G2L on sale and I think I might grab a
24 pack of batt's with it and a sheath so I can start carrying it
around. I was looking also at a 6P but it's twice the
price, but it's also a great looking light. I have been looking at some other
brands but would have to order them from afar whereas we have the whole
lineup of Surefire in a local store.

You will enjoy it.

When you get the itch for something brighter, it's easy -- with Surefires the upgrade possibilities are endless.

G'day mate!

I've also just purchased my first Surefire flashlight - an E1L for EDC.

Whilst the overall build quality is good, there are "chips" in the HA III coating on the tailcap, and the threading on the body (head end) is disappointing ... it starts off with a "gap" in the threading, making screwing the head on a bit tricky initially.

Besides that, I'm very pleased with the purchase! Not sure if it's worth the money though ... an RA Clicky seems better value for money in hindsight.

Cheers
Andrew

If you can swing it, I'd go for the 6P (or Z2). If you ever want to go brighter, the metal body lights will help support the brighter drop-ins as they're much better at keeping the electronics and LED cooler. Matter of fact, there are high-power drop-ins that are not recommended for use in G2s due to the polymer body not being able to sufficiently keep the LED within acceptable temps. Just something to keep in mind.

Just be careful right now, the upgradable Surefires are on sale as they get phased out for the sealed head KX4 versions.

If you want the flexibility to modify them going forward get the older ones.

You should get a good deal if you shop around.

thank you all for you responses and thoughts/expertise. right now being
new to it all I am thinking a bit in terms of pricing for my first light. however
I'm open to suggestions on a good basic first Surefire?
I do have one shop (local) in mind and that's Warriors & Wonders in
Vancouver to which I am local too. I do like the look of the Surefire brand
and he does have an excellent selection of goods. :)

IMHO the 6P/6PL is one of the best starter Surefires you can go for. My other favorite is the C2.

I do dig the Nitrolon versions (they are fantastic) but the metal bodied ones offer better thermal management for LEDs (which require heatsinking, unlike incans which do not).

Carrot, thanks and I will check out the 6PL closely when I get at
the shop. It was just shy of being double the price so that's why
I was leaning towards the G2L. But I appreciate the advice.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the G2L came with a aluminum head while the G2 Nitrolon came with a, well .... Nitrolon head.

One question I have is on the G2L package it says the light has
80 lumen output yet their website says 120 lumen? Why the
difference from online to packaging? :)

This may be the difference between the first generation of G2Ls and the second generation of G2Ls. Perhaps that's why they're on sale. :)

Correct, the G2L sports an aluminum bezel. The G2 has a Nitrolon bezel.

Depends on the light - the early lights underrate the output. Newer lights are closer to being honest.

You really won't go wrong even with an older model SF LED light - and you can upgrade if you don't like the SF P60L module.

Another reason the older models are being liquidated, in some cases, is the transition from P60 modules to enclosed LED heads which are not as lego-compatible.

As mentioned the sealed KX4 head at 120 lumen is now being used on the Surefire LED models based on the 6P.

The older P60L module is 80 lumen but allows you to swap it out with other LED drop-in options.

So there are 3x versions of the G2L depending on the age.
1. Nitrolon body and bezel
2. Nitrolon body metal bezel
3. Nitrolon body KX4 sealed bezel

If you get a No1 or No3 you are still advised to buy a metal Surefire bezel to unlock the drop-in convenience of the G2.

Sounds like you got a No2, hope it was a good price.

Thanks again fellas, yes it looks like the number 2 with the metal
bezel. I'm happy with it and had a nice go at a cabbage field here
tonite and it looked great! I think it was a good price at $49, I grabbed
a SF sheath + 12 batts.

Where'd you get it from?

That's a good price to score with the sheath and batteries.

Trevor,
Sorry I didn't mean to say I got the package at $49. The light was
$49, sheath $15, batts $12/24.99. I shopped at Warriors & Wonders
up here in Canada. Not sure if I'm aloud to post a link but it can be
googled if interested. He has the whole Surefire line I think.

I have two Surefires, an E2DL and an E1B, both disappointing for different reasons. I live in the UK, and the crenelations on the bezel of the E2DL are too aggressive for comfort, so I don't take it out much. Its not that I mind personally, but it might be considered by "some" to be an offensive weapon! I might have them reduced or removed if I can find someone who will do a professional job. Otherwise its just about perfect.

The E1B is actually a bigger disappointment because I mostly love it, but the tailcap means that in my pocket, it will switch on all too easily, and the design is way too smooth for my hands. What it really needs is the Z68 tailcap, but for reasons that I can't fathom, Surefire won't ship it to the UK, and other suppliers won't sell to me as I'm not military or LEO. If anyone can point me in the direction of a supplier who will ship one to the UK (Channel Islands) I would appreciate it.
