I\'m new and need advice for a mod... Please...

Hi,
I have recently purchased a Diamond 3 watt Luxeon led for my 3 d-cell light, I have read about overheating and I don't want it to happen to my new bulb. Is there any mod for this? Thanks, Jordan

Re: I\'m new and need advice for a mod... Please...

Welcome to cpf. There are a ton of mods that are offered for Luxeons into Mag heads. Some more recent ones I can think of were done by 3rd shift (among many others). The basic parts needed are offered by several cpf members, but one place to look is the supplier area (Sandwich Shopee)

Time is on your side - search for o sinks and mag mods.

Have fun. HarryN

Hi Jordan,

Can you check if this is the diamond lux III bulb you got? If so then those are designed as drop ins w/o the need for any further mods. Actually if you check the site I linked it's mentioned there too. Those of us who mod our own mag lights are the ones who need to worry about overheating. Yours should've been engineered and produced with all of that in mind.

That is the bulb I have. So I should be okay then? I work in law enforcement so I really don't want flashlight failure. Thanks!

BTW: I looked for mods for the bulb and couldn't find any, does anyone have a link for me, PLEASE? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Welcome to the CPF Jordan. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif There aren't any mods you can do with those Diamond LED bulbs. Those are designed to be dropped into the existing bulb holder and are driven quite mildly. Whilst the colour and brightness may impress someone who has never seen high power Luxeon lights, they are mild in comparison with what happens in the mods area (here).

What the other guys are talking about in terms of mods are to mods that involve putting in custom heatsinks and LuxeonIII or LuxeonV LEDs driven at or above specifications. CHeck out some of the links in my signature line for some examples.

Okay, I see now. Thanks! I thought I bought a piece of garbage. LOL

Dang, after seeing the 3 watts you build makes me fill ashamed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Is there any 3 or 5 watt kits I can buy for my 3-d cell mag for around $30.00 or below?

Hotbeam, what do you think about this?. . . .

Hey, Hotbeam. Do you suppose you could make a heatsink that would have a hole cut out in the center of it big enough that it would just fit over that outer part of the Diamond unit? I wonder if a modified hotlips could be created for those who have this dropin. Just a thought. I guess that would depend upon whether that outer part acts as a heat sink for the LED.

Re: Hotbeam, what do you think about this?. . . .

Hey Jordan, what you have is definately an improvement over the standard bulb. From there on, you have lots of options. As far as kits are concerned for your 3D, a LuxIII one may be suitable. You will need some handy tools such as a cutting tool like a Dremel and soldering iron. PM me.

Hi Orion, doesn't the Diamond unit fit into the existing bulb base?

Re: Hotbeam, what do you think about this?. . . .

I'm not sure there are any kits for that price..
But then I can't say I really looked.
I grabbed LEDs and Hotlips heatsinks from my man Hotbeam and I got downboys ecans and thermal epoxy from the shoppe and fatmans from Georges80. Then I also went and got some lenses from flashllightlens.

Re: Hotbeam, what do you think about this?. . . .

Hotbeam, it looks like it does, probably screws right on there, but the black outer part could be connected to the LED as some sort of heatsink for it, and if that is the case, a modified Hotlips may draw that heat to the body.

I hope I'm expaining myself well.
