IR 3 Watt driving questions.

It *MIGHT* run on a single AA, but don't expect it to be bright, or run for long.

Here's current draw specs at certain voltages:

2.0v = 1.5a
1.9v = 1.3a
1.8v = 1.0a
1.7v = .82a
1.6v = .58a
1.5v = .40a

Since alkalines aren't designed for high current draw, I wouldn't expect it to run for more than 10 minutes.

You'd be better off with 2 nimh's and a resistor to drop it to 2.0 volts.

Thank you Brian, the host I'm looking at won't allow two full length AA's, it's a single 18650 or two 123 host. I guess if I'm serious I can look at the sub sizes and drive it through a resistor like you mention, and thanks again for the idea.
