Let's try this again...

I'm new to this forum and I am looking for an IR laser that is low cost. I am not so much interested in beam quality, as long as it isn't "worse" than a regular dollar store laser pen. However I need to go with IR since a visible laser will not work in my case.

So, any good place that sells "budget minded" IR lasers with the same quality as a regular laser pen at a competitive price?

if you must have an ir get any green laser and take out the ktp crystal. there's your IR laser. it won't have very good collimination, and it will be very dangerous. the only place i know of that sells a ready made ir laser is CNI and also laserglow ( cni distributor ).

you could also build your own with a dvd/cd buner diode ( both have 2 diodes, one is visible red and one is IR ) and get a cheap pointer to use as a donor.

Hey you are in luck! I have no idea about what the beam looks like, but give me your adress and I will send you the IR laser from a highspeed DVD burner that I took apart.

The thread is labeled 'Harvesting the laser diode from a DVD burner" or something similar.

have you considered using garage door opener/protection beams?

you know the ones that if your kid/dog/car/whatever crosses the beam while the door is closing it stops the door from crushing them. after checking your original thread this seems to be what you are looking for?

I thought about that…but I need small packaging and a large lens won't work in my case. I just need some low power very directional infrared light in a very small package.

Cool I'll send you a PM! :D I saw the thread and it never dawned on me about using a laser from a DVD burner…lol.
