IR LEDs

Anyone have any suggestions for a good IR LED source? I've tried a couple drop-in modules that have so far been disappointing.

How bright do you need it? What current do you plan on running it at? What size and shape does it have to be? There are tons of options..

Looking for a single, surface mount (could be like luxeon or like cree body styles). 3W range. I'll probably end up running it between 500-800mA. 850nm or above for wavelength.

I had found a 1W LED by Edison but I ended up needeing 3 of them to get the light level I wanted and that complicated things.
