Is Anyone Still Using a SureFire A2 ?

Does anyone still use this light? If so, what for? Do you EDC it or grab it if/when needed?

Yeah, I use mine almost daily. No edc though.

Size is nice, heat output is not.

Battery life is pretty crummy though. Would love to be able to mod this light with a pila/etc.

Great camping light. Carry it and a spares carrier and that's all I need. That and a petzl zipka.

Great light to go jogging/running with.

Also, it easily lights up the tail section of my airplane.

I don't EDC the A2 very often any more but I do use it with red LEDs as a round the house at night flashlight.

Yep its my EDC, been carrying one since they came out although I replaced my 1st one w/a porcupine version awhile ago.
I still prefer the A2 over the various SF LED lights that I've had/have (L1, L2 L4, L5) and the non-reg incandescents.

The A2 was my bright EDC light for about a year. I replaced it with a McGizmo L1-BK/2x123/PR-T BK/BB750/X4T. I tried a lot of lights, but the A2 was pretty hard to beat for my use. Lately I've been using a PR-BK/BB750/X3T/E2D that JollyRoger built because I can use Pilas with it.

Seriously though, I use mine every night, but it's too expensive to EDC. It's the only light where I can look across the field and then navigate inside the house without blindness.

Yup I've used it as my primary light for the last nearly one year now. I haven't found a light ot replace it yet....!!

I use mine all the time. Most of the time I end up not needing anything more than the LEDs. This has lead me to think that a "cool" light would be a two stage switch 2x123 light like the A2 except that the high power would be in the P61 lumen range. This would be a nice useful taclight with the low setting preserving the batteries and useful for most chores (admin. duty, navigation, etc.) with useful high power.

I was at a local store here in Singapore and noticed they have a couple of black HAIII A2 for sale. Was salivating over it but decided to give it up to save money. Now I have sleepless nights thinking about it..

I use it for every day for EDC and around the house at night. Now I went even further back in time and got a new E2e for when I want a smaller, bright EDC.

I am actually thinking of getting one of these for use surveying in the construction industry. This talk of 'do you still use it?' leaves me a little worried about whether I might not be buying the latest technology available.

Could it be said that the high beam is too powerful / demanding on batteries? Or is it the case that, owing to the compromise of having dual power, the beam at either setting is too weak?

I only want to buy one surefire. It would be really good to get the choice right first time.

go get a SF L2, it has dual output and uses a 5watt Luxeon Star LED.. has low and high, 15Lumens on Low, 65Lumens on high.. if you go camping it will be good too!

I don't use mine that much anymore. Have been fovoring the LED lights lately. Will probably BST eventually to pay for my new lights.

Hi batbelt, you would be better off using an incandescent since you are dealing with construction stuff where detail spotting is very important. No matter how bright and powerful an LED light is it is never powerful enough to bring out details due to the lack of red spectrum in the light. I don't know how far would you be using the light from but if you are usually within 10 to 20 metres away from subject then the A2 could do the job. If you are in need of a more powerful light I would suggest you buy a C3 with a 105 lumens P90 lamp for an hour of brightness and also a cheap LED light for walking around the site. The L2 may seem apetizing but it is after all quite longish (as long as a C3) and doesn't bring out as much detail as a 105 lumens lamp.

I second that notion - an incan on the belt for detail and a 123 powered led for general use, to soak up all those 123s that are too dim for comfort in the incan! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
